It's good you are researching in advance of a failure.

Well, the whole idea is to be able to go mod crazy without worries. I don't feel like going through a clutch per year or have to baby it so it lasts lol

I'm of the same mind, build the platform to handle what ever you want to through at it. I hate doing stuff twice...

Freeing up the exhaust some, 180 stat and canned DSP tuning coupled with taller tires is about all I want to do with the stock clutch. You can just tell it's slipping more on engagement at take-off. It's not slipping once engaged or at shifts but I have no doubts that i'm getting close to it's limits with very minimal mods. It will still last a very long time with my current setup but I don't want to be limited by the clutch down the road.

Well, I may have hit a dead end. I was hoping I had something figured out but I guess not. Here's the response I got from Billy at McLeod:

"Matt,

It may physically bolt to the flywheel but the diameter of the disc is to small to carry the load of a 5000lbs + truck.

You need a dual disc clutch with 12” or 13” discs, not 9.5” discs. You’ll go through that clutch really fast due to its lack of surface area."

Basically it would have enough clamping power to hold whatever I throw at it but, because the truck is heavier than a car, it would have to slip more to get it going on engagement. Smaller friction pads need more pounds of pressure/square inch for same friction. That makes the pads scrub off faster. If they slip too much they can glaze over and actually slip fully engaged regardless of clamping force. I've asked if I can custom order what I want, probably not or it will be an outlandish price.....I did casually mention that every '03-'08 Ram 2500 with a Hemi and a manual uses the same clutch and flywheel.....hopefully they'll see the need lol I'm sure everyone with big lift and 35"+ tires would love to have the option of a much stronger clutch. I can't be the only crazy guy out there....:D

I feel your pain, the preverbal pushing the rock up the hill with no end in sight....

lol yeah :thumb:

Actually the Centerforce clutch Keith linked to seems to be the best that's offered for my truck. Oem disc size is 11 3/8" whereas the Centerforce is 12" and I believe it has higher spring pressure so it will hold more than oem no doubts but in the back of my mind I'm still going to be worrying about it while modding in the future......I'll keep hunting and researching as long as the stocker keeps hanging on :thumb:

With the Centerforce hardware available you can choose the clutch material that best suits your needs. Very cool...

:thumb: Yeah, it is! I would love those same options with a floater plate and 2nd friction disc though! :hide: :D

I suppose you could have the floater plate water cut and machine drive dowels and then measure the added thickness and install a spacer to bring the stack height back into spec. Would probably also need a custom input shaft. Shouldn't cost but a couple thousand in custom pieces.... lol

yeah...maybe if I hit the lottery lol...also would have to increase spring tension in the pressure plate too. Doubling the surface area without increasing the pressure will cause it to slip too.

I emailed Centerforce to see what is the strongest they could come up with. Also asked about holding power compared to oem. If that clutch is the best that's available I definitely want to know how far I can go with mods without problems :thumb:

The Centerforce might be the way to go, at least for now, until something else comes around. Here's the response I received when I asked what it was rated for since it wasn't listed on their website:

Matt,

DF440178 is rated at 600 ft/lbs at the crank. This is a 12” clutch with 1-1/8”-10 spline input shaft.

Centerforce Clutches

I can do quite a bit to the truck and should still be under the 600 ft/lbs tq number :thumb: ....well for quite a while anyway....:brows:lol

It says the centerforce can hold 50-90% better than factory I would say go for it. Just think how many sled pulls you made with factory and this is way stronger.
lol on a completely stock motor. I still don't have a cai lol If you do it right sled pulling with a manual is not any worse than taking off from a stop sign with a trailer. Sled pulls pretty easy at start and gets progressively "heavier" :thumb: Now with an auto you won't be able to lock in the convertor and that gets hard on stuff, especially when trans kicks down a gear lol It should do great for me for quite a while. It will take quite a few mods to get over its rated tq. Actually my stocker still feels great and should still make it to at least 100k :thumb:

We'll see how the summer goes, I want to at least buy it and have it around, whether I put it in or not depends on how current clutch holds up :D Thanks to everyone that chimed in to help and offer ideas! Greatly appreciated! :D

Whenever I do swap it there will be pictures abound, definitely some comparison shots :thumb:

MANual puller, have you had any other luck finding a clutch?

I'm currently running a centerforce clutch in my puller. It's holding, but not very well. Granted, I swapped in a 6.1 SRT motor..... with some mods... ;)

Nope. The centerforce was the best I was able to locate. I stopped doing research on the matter because I actually sold the truck to my Dad and uncle so they could use it on the farm. Reg cab wasn't going to cut the mustard with 2 kids :) number two is due July 29th and I should be taking possession of an '11 crew cab tomorrow :D

Honestly, My thoughts were to go full custom on the clutch. Basically buy a second centerforce friction disc, have a floater plate cut, space out the pressure plate the thickness of floater plate plus friction disc and hope to God that the slave cylinder had enough stroke to disengage it....
