Carb cleaner and coffee filters. Mineral spirits works well to.

My dad would always use a drill and wire brush to do it and it would really make me cringe :icon_nono:

Nah, lay the filter on the piston, spay it till it's soaked, come back in a bit wipe the top of the piston like you would with a rag, toss the filter in the trash.

Coffee filters don't leave lint like a rag would.

I use water methanol a shot at a time to mine clean.... ;)

I personally dont bother with cleaning pistons off but sometimes customers see them dirty and want them clean. Carb cleaner, oven cleaner, brake cleaner and brass brush and lint free towel work wonders.

Got it. I was more thinking that if there was any carbon build up, it might be a good idea to clean that off. I don't think there will be or if there is, it's not going to be significant.

Timing chain set came in on Saturday. I'm thinking that I should add upper and lower rad hoses, new tensioner pulley and both idler pulleys and a new belt as well. I've got the majority of the small parts in hand otherwise.

Using all new stuff makes everything easier for the startup.

Yeah, that's the general idea. The only part of the engine that will be original will be the short block. The idea that I have is to freshen the engine up this way and then start saving to buy a new short block, probably a 392 or something like that, and then swap everything over to that in a couple years.

The engine runs great right now, just has the standard hemi tick but has had that since I bought the truck with 48,900 miles on it. With over 201k on it now, it's been as reliable as a stone and the engine itself has never been opened since I've owned the truck, not even a valve cover.

Didn't you install new lifters and push rods?

It would be interesting if you could determine what causes the tick..

I thought that people determined it was the OEM 3rd gen lifters that caused it? That's why replacing the lifters, pushrods and valve springs is so common, even if not doing a cam. I could be completely wrong on that assumption of course.

I did see a thread by a guy on ramforum recently that solved his ticking problem by re-torquing the rocker girdles. I think he has an 04 or 05. Stock engine.

Well, things might get delayed for a bit. I'm being laid off by the company I've been at for the last 11 years.Part of a $1 billion dollar cost reduction. They are moving a lot of the IT department and engineering to India. But I have 5 months here still, last day will be 9/28 and I'll be getting a nice severance package. So once I pay off my bike and credit cards, I might have the fund to buy the heads and cam and maybe even go balls out and get a short block and start with a complete new engine. We'll see.

Sounds like you are on top of this upcoming change. Hope it works to your advantage. Any thought on being part of the transistion team in India?

No, I'm done with this company and the political BS here. Time for a change. It's actually somewhat of a relief to know that my hand is being forced to find something different.
