Started gathering parts for my manual swap, bougth a SRT10 T56 locally that came out of a viper truck wich was involved in a side collision. First thing I want to do is to confirm that the mainshaft is not bent (tailhousing was damaged), on to the questions :)

- what is the allowed 'out of straigthness' of the actual mainshaft? (not side play in the bearings)

- is it possible to measure the main shaft straightness in with the shaft still in the transmission? Or does it need to be disassembled and the shaft measured using v blocks? I'm thinking bearing play could lead to false measurements?

- I did a quick measurement on a machined surface where there normally sits a bearing and on an unmachined part of the main shaft. Machined part had 0.001"/0.04 play, unmachined part had 0.01/0.4mm play. Am wondering if the shaft is out of round or maybe the difference in measurements is the fabrication tolerance difference on the machined and not machined part?

Nice!

What is that harmonic balancer looking thing? Are you using a Gear Vender unit?

#345 ·
That thing is only on the 2006 transmission, the transmission that seized up cam out of a 2004 so didn't have it. Apparantly (thanks for clearing that up Keith :) ) it's indeed some kind of harmonics balancer.

Some guy I know from a local board is running a gear vendor unit and he pointed out to me that they use a pinion seal clamp.

Found out another thing :facepalm:, turns out the manual has a mistake in it, it states the T56 has a 2.27litre/quarts oil capacity, and. I put that much oil in it the last time

Image

But a bit further in the manual it states to fill it until it stars overflowing from the fill hole, it only start overflowing when I put in 4 litres/quarts, did a quick search online and it indeed needs 4 quarts, so turns out I've been running my first T56 at half capacity from the start!!!:censored::censored::censored::censored::censored:

On the road again, popped the transmission back in in a couple of hours, I'm getting too good at this :D:D Truck is setup for the yearly inspection over here. Couple of small cats restricting the exhaust and taller tires so truck is lacking in the power department for now.

Trans is nice, quiet and shifts smooth, fingers crossed that it lasts a bit longer this time :)

Good job, I know your having fun again. How long before the inspection? Do they check your OBDII for function?

#352 ·
Check my other thread in general repair forum for the yearly inspection drama :)

The finishing touches :)

I couldn't locate the stock SRT trim piece to mount the shifter boot, unfortunately the position of the shifter boot isn't on a flat surface in the cab so had to improvise.

Got a new toy, so wanted to use it :)

Put in a plate so I had a flat surface for the shifter boot:

Reverse lockout solenoid connected to the shifter ball

Finished, not perfect, but will have to do untill I can source a reasonably priced stock trim piece

The way the clutch was, everyday was leg day when riding the truck :) it was very stiff, even up to the point that I stalled the truck because it was too hard too fine control the pedal. I changed the pedal ratio from 5:1 to 7:1 and it's a very noticable difference, clutch is still heavier than a normal car, but very managable now.

And last but not least, made a bracket to mount the clutch master fluid reservoir:

That's all folks :D:D (until I melt this transmission)

Looks good, I like the shift boot. wouldn't change it.

#357 ·
Christof, any chance of lengthening the clutch pedal a little?

#358 ·
I've heard that you don't have to push as hard with a longer appendage......:D

#360 ·
It ended up look pretty cool. Makes me wish I had a stick. I had a Dakota many moons ago with a 5 speed. My first brand new vehicle. Then kids can and so did the minivan.:facepalm:

Reread this thread, and wanted to bump it up.

#362 ·
Nice to know someone still reads this stuff :)

Although many of the photos are no longer available in this thread, I believe you have told me most of the things NOT to do when I finally get around to 'stickin' my '04 QC Laramie.

The T56 will go in at the same time as the Arrington 410 stroker kit.

Go for it, you'll love it, still puts a grin on my face everytime I drive it! :D:D

PM me if you need any info or pictures!

Wow! What a write up. I?m about to do this swap on my 04 Bee as I?ve just crapped out my 3rd 545rfe. Tired of wasting money on these turds. Wish the photos were still up. Would you have done anything different? Are there any better alternatives?

#367 ·
Not really, biggest thing that's still giving me issues is the 03 pcm, should've gotten rid of that a long time ago!!

Something you might wanna look into is using a challenger bellhousing and oem clutch, might save you some money. I went with a steel quicktime bellhousing and a twin disc clutch which are pricey.

Make sure you get the ram viper truck transmission there are a lot of different types of T56's out there. Better alternative would be using the more current T56 magnum although I'm not sure that the current magnum is a stronger trans than the older ram viper one, might wanna look into that.

If you want I can 'wetransfer' you all the pictures I took during the swap? Pm me your email if you want em.

#368 ·
The TR6060 is about 100FT/lbs stronger that the 92-02 box and about 50 better than the 02-07/8ish.
The 09-up Challenger parts if you can get them would make for a great swap.

But keep in mind to swap to a T-56 Manual is going to coast in the 3-4k range depending on trans . Realistically the trans should set you back$ $1200-2500. the other parts $350-1k total

#370 ·
Anything will be better than spending 5k every 6 months on an useless 545rfe

#372 ·
03 was the first year of the 3g with a hemi. They didn't have a fully developed pcm design. 04 incorporated the tcm within the pcm. They made a big step up in engine management but didn't have a very flexible tcm. 05 they got it all together. Fortunately it doesnt take much to swap in the 05 into a 03 and 04 is a plug and play if one wanted the better trans tuning. Keep in mind trans tuning can still be a hassle..

#376 ·
That makes sense because I tried to have my trans tuned a few months back by my tuner and he said I have an odd ball year and trans tuning was very limited and not worth the hassle.

#378 ·
Trans can be very expensive and cost a great deal more than $5k. The value comes from them being a one time expenditure that do what they are advertised to do. If one of these high dollar unit fails thats when I have heart burn.

#379 ·
So after thinking this thing thru, I’m gonna go with the T56 swap. Thanks for all the info guys and especially Belgiquebasterd for the write up. Gonna start gathering parts and gonna have some questions along the way. Might add some new pics to the thread.

So who’s the go to people for the 04 PCM flash from auto to manual? Hopefully not the dealer! Can this be done from a HP Tuner?

#382 ·
I had B&G Performance flashed a 03 auto-pcm with 03 manual software. And was just told that Hotwire can also flash pcm's. But have no experience with them.

#385 ·
just had mine done by B&G, its was like $400

#386 ·
just for flashing or core 05 pcm included?
