So after a little thinking about what a mess the first oil change made, 20 minutes of wiping cleaning and it's still dripping, I think I have a new strategy for the next time around.

I got a peach can, smaller than a small coffee can and bigger than a soup can, and I was able to get it in over the filter from the front, over the cross member. I think I can loosen the filter, put the peach can over it and then unspin the filter and have it and the oil drop into the can, then carefully with minimal tilting get the can/oil/filter out the same way and get the drips with a paper towel.

It used to work something like that on my Tacoma with a small coffee can. the key is how much titling is required to remove the can/oil/filter combo...

Let you all know how it works out in about 3 months! :thumb:

I just use a piece of aluminum flashing about 6 inches wide and a foot long, bend the edges a bit to form a trough and slide under the filter while you loosen it with the oil running down and off the trough into your catch pan. Once oil quits running remove trough and old filter then spin on the new on and clean the little oil the dripped with a paper towel/rag.

:coolsmiley:

I laid a antifreeze jug on it's side and cut about a fourth of it off and slid it under the oil filter from the front of the engine and it catches the oil and the filter when I take it off. I still wrap tin foil around the rack and pinion bellows just in case I spill any oil

I use a zip lock with a couple of paper towels wadded up inside. Put it around the filter after it's a little loose and let the oil drain in the zip lock.

I think I will try the zip lock with the paper towels. The can was better, but I was still using language my wife didn't appreciate...

I'll let you know! Thanks for the ideas!

Well, I just said screw it and got the Transdapt 1127 oil filter re-location kit off of Amazon. It fit and now I'm running a Fram XG8a filter mounted on the support bracket to the front bumper. Should take me about 30 seconds to remove the filter now with zero mess.

The oil filter location was the only thing that I really didn't like about this truck.

Great thread because I'm prepping for my first oil change . Great ideas but think I might just go the old fashion way and wipe everything off when I'm done .
So are you able to reach the oil filter from under the truck or do you have to get it from on top threw the engine bay . It looks like you can from under but not sure .
Do these new Hemi's come with full synthetic oil ? Don't want to turn this or hijack this thread into a oil choice thread just curious if it's semi or full synthetic .

You just gotta work it through over the rack. It's no big deal. Just makes a little bit of a mess. Nothing a can of brake clean can't solve. And I use Mobil 1 in my truck. I buy two 5qt jugs at walmart for $22.50 each plus the mopar filter. And then save the other half of the jug for the next oil change.

Thanks I figured you'd have to get the right angle because it does look tight in there . Great choice !

Loosen but don't undo then cut some cardboard up and bend it into a V channel and loosen the filter till it drains once done then unscrew it and carefully remove it from the truck. I have done a ton of these at work issue free and barely ever make a mess. The thing is a pain to reach but deff doable mess free with patience.
