My 2004 Ram 1500 5.7 with 245k miles started making a ticking sound earlier this week. It might have been doing it earlier but it was noticeable over my exhaust which isn't exactly quiet. This morning it cut off while I was driving. Now ots smoking from the oil gill cap and making an ugly grinding noise. Is my baby gonna die??

That’s a failed lifter and bad camshaft if I have ever heard it. Time to tear it down and inspect sorry to say

Yep sorry to say!
Do you have a good shop you can take it to or can you do it.

if you can do some work pull covers and see what rocker has a ton of play in it. Once you find it then you will have confirmed for sure. Sadly both heads need removal and change all lifters and camshaft.

Damn. I wonder if it'll be cheaper to just get a new motor? I can do some work myself so hopefully it's something I can do myself.
