Keith, for the TV cable i first bought a Lokar TV kit. It had all the fittings I needed but was too short. Called lokar and was told that any lenght cable can be ordered by adding the number of feet after the item number. Believe the additional charge for 10 feet was around $135. I found on ebay Micheal Cushion sells motorcycle clutch/brake cable for old school bikes. I ordered 13 feet of 6mm nylon sleeve outer cable and 15 feet of inner cable cost about $45. I used the various lokar fittings and it all goes together nicely. Shoot me a email if you want his email address, you can order directly from him. The pressure switches can be a little difficult to identify. The od switch I have has a range of 30-50psi and the LU 40-60psi. 1 pound = 1 mph. Mine are adjusted for 43 and 48 at the moment which is working for me.
Note the switches are normally open closing at the set point.

Did the 518 come in 4X4 trucks as well or did they have something different?

Let me know if you need an extra set of hands to help with your trans.. :thumb::thumb:

Well done...

Try to make a note book on the swap for reference down the road.

You can modify the gas pedal arm for best fit and then lengthen or shorten the arm on the trans to dial in the ratio for correct full throttle position.

Keith, please make sure you take lots of pictures. I am starting to think about going this route as well, problem is that I am not that experienced when it comes to auto transmissions in a performance application (other than the very basics) and seeing pics and being able to follow your and Greg's input in your thread would be big help! :D

Max, this is very close to a stock install. Using the special flex plate allows the use of a a518/46rh torque converter . Cross member bolts up with mounting holes slightly slotted using the 545RFE rear mount. The driveshaft can be reused without modification. I use a floor shifter for the 3 spd transmissions. 727, A518, 46rh, turbo 350, 400....
I think it wouldn't take a whole lot to use the ram column shifter if someone really wanted too. The cooling lines I recommend making custom lines. I first cut the metal oem cooling lines off at the rear of the block and used rubber hoses clamped onto them. I had one blow off rather quickly and I thought I'd burnt up the new trans. So do it right the first time. I've outlined the most common ways of connecting the TV cable. Keith will be doing a connection on his 05 which will cover all bases. Alternative cables can be made from heavy-duty throttle cable or better yet vintage motorcycle clutch or brake cable. I use 6mm clutch cable that I buy from a guy in England. The od and tcm lockup is done by grounding it's wire from the trans. There is a three wire plug the center wire is 12v supply and the other two control od/tc by grounding through a simple toggle switch or pressure switches adjusted for predetermined speed. There are different dip stick tubes. I don't know how to identify one from the other except by diameter. I use a larger one with a rubber insert unmodified. It has a bracelet that bolted up to a bell housing bolt. I stripped the trans harness completely out of my truck which is easier said then done. Recommend doing it with the trans removed. The only wires from the truck that needs considering is the backup light which has a 12v supply that connects internal to the trans via plug that makes when placed in reverse. Also the p/n wire that senses when the trans is in either park or neutral for starting. The A518 is a good fit..
Now if you have the money I would use a 727 and a Gear Vendor unit making the trans into a 6 spd. They say they haven't seen a drag car that wasn't quicker by splitting 2nd gear. This combo can support 3000hp.

NP-203 and NP-208 were used. These transmissions were in use for over thirty years and used in most everything. Including AMC and Jeeps.

There won't be any dash icons to indicate gear selection. The gear lever lock I suspect would need to be removed. Although it is brake activated, you may be able to retain it. The cable bracket on the end that mounts to the trans would need to be fabricated which should be easy. The lever on the trans itself would need to have the same dimension from it's cable hole to shaft mounting hole. Most are close to being the same and would be easy enough to make work. With a little work I can see it being done.

Got the trans and starter for the truck for $175 total! Now to rebuild the trans for strength or just ride it for a little bit and iron all the wiring and what not out we will see how it plays out. Have dipstick also for a truck and TV cable for same truck. Now to clean it up and open the pan to see what up in there. Ended up going to a junk yard buddy fell thru. The truck I happened to get this one from was a 94 v8 Dodge Ram 2wd with headers and all kinds of goodies so trabs may be worked a little bit not sure.

You are making remarkable progress. What starter did you get? And I'm curious about the TV cable. Post up some pictures. What converter are you going to use? I'm using a loose 3000, but I believe you have done well with a higher stall. The fun begins.....

The A518/46rh trans came behind many small block. Starting with 1992 thru 1995 with 1996 thru 2002 designated as 46re using a rudimentary TCM. Anyone wanting to get back into trans controllers could possibly wire this up as it only requires basic inputs. If wanting a 727 I would recommend getting one with a lockup converter. The vast majority of them didn't have a lockup converter.

Maybe see if it'll bolt up ok with a spare block.

Keith, you are correct, there are two bolt holes on the engine block that I had to grind an angle on to gain clearance for the starter motor. I'll post a picture what I'm talking about.

I will give it a test for tomm for giggles on the floor garage needs some cleaning anyway lol. I will then year the entire trans down inspect and do a shift kit for now if it's good. Complete my house sale then upgrade the internals. Stock hard parts are good till around 800wheel so I'm good for awhile there.

Keith, these are the bolt hole bosses I was making reference to. I had to grind an angle on them to clear the starter motor.
