Excellent! That sounds like it is totally dialed in. Your intake temp is surprising, I saw 120 degrees the other day at 6500. Indeed she should fly... especially with the cooler weather. Well done..

Well that's about all she wrote lol. My L/R is about gone. I fear if I punch it from a dig a few more times I may not have takeoff anymore lol. This sucks because this is not the time I want to be pulling the trans or dealing with that issue rite now at all. Not sure what caused this to happen all of a sudden but it's wiping the L/R out that's for sure. Only thing I can think of I did different recently is a full pull in 1st gear and then let off and ride it back down the rpm band. The only issue I could see here is in 2nd or drive the L/R is only used for the first 150 rpm of output shaft speed. Manually selecting 1st gear keeps it locked in all the time. This is possibly where the issue came up not sure but damn this sucks. For now just going to baby the trans and drive nice and easy.

Do you have a spare transmission you can swap in?

#2,019 ·
Low/reverse clutch pack.

Yes that's what I did the only thing I did different from this entire time of driving this trans to now. Then I have a bang shift and a way high CVI number.

I do have a back up but it's just that a backup no perf no bearing on it at all. I could just buy the alto kits and rebuild it I suppose. This sucks that's for sure. I'm going to drive it till it fails and then go from there.

Ahhh time for the upgrade!

And this is why I'm trying to cure my 545RFE infestation sooner rather than later :D

this will be the #14 for me. I am done with this pulling stuff.
Don't think of it that way. Think of it as some maintenance that has to be done to a 11 second truck. The stage III trans has done good in consideration of all the racing, testing, and dyno tuning you've done Keith with your 11 second truck. And your 11 second truck still got great gas mileage and was able to drive long distance with it. Not many can say that!

Keith, keep in mind if you make the changes now you will save in the long run. I know it is easy to say, but it's the truth in this case. You are not going to keep a 545 in your truck and certainly not race it.....

What really IS the best bullet-proof automatic transmission that will work with a heavily built Hemi that can still be daily street driven with good manners? :ermm:

Does this beast actually exist ?

The 518 can take 1000hp all day setup correctly 800hp with minor stuff done. The 727 now can take whatever you dish out built correctly. Both trans are almost the same except the 518 has an OD tail shaft end. The trick here is that I want overdrive at least for highway use still debating on the lockup converter or not and can even go with the gear vendors down the road and essentially have an 8speed lol! I am going to start buying the few things I need to do this swap slowly and be done with it. I will also be selling the 545rfe stage 3 with all new clutches shortly there after so if anyone needs a performance trans I will have one after swap for sale.

Way to heavy! Looked into that already. The 518 or 727 is the way to go for fast trucks that's for sure. There is almost 80lb diff in rotating mass there. The Chrysler trans is also only about $300 dollars for a performance clutch set it it melts down. All in all I will be a decent amount faster what fun this is going to be. New adventure coming very soon.

I can say I would definitely go with a lockup converter. At cruise I run 2100 at 65 mph in od and locked up. All I do to make a pass is drop out of OD and with the rpm increase you are in low boost and really moving. Cruising rpm's is too low for you not to be locked up. And while making a hard pass and dropping out of lockup and od both making high boost be very certain you have good pavement under you.

Do you wait for the 'downshift' or mash as soon as you hit the OD off?

I can lean on it and come out of lu, but usually I set up the pass and I'm already unlocked. This is mostly on a relatively busy two lane. If you asking if I'm doing anything specific for the trans I'm not. I've made a ton of wot passes and launches. The automatic shift points are conservative and when I'm beating on it I manual shift to get the rpm up to my shift points. (6200)

Very true. Neat thing is the mpg is going to virtually stay the same. The OD gear ratio is .67 545rfe and .69 a518 so that's at least one good thing. Parts coming soon ordering flywheel this week and finding junk yard a518 to build maybe even drive temp for a little to save for rebuild kit I really want.

I'm happy with my install and would do it again, but only sooner.

Well, if this is going to happen Keith. Do a really good write up with (hate to say it) Greg's help. Show the info to help others make their decision. :thumb: It's a big step to swap out to another trans in our trucks. Allot has to be done. It's not a simple swap out. It also hasn't shown to be a faster/stronger trans yet. But, lets start by posting some important info to get the complete picture.

Believe it or not there's nothing to it. If you have a 2003 truck it's actually the easiet as there's a location for a throttle valve cable. Greg has this swap done already.

Parts for a HEMI trans swap to a A518/46rh are as follows!

Trans weather built or junk yard
Ati 727/518 flex plate
Throttle valve cable (for governor pressure)
Torque converter (ring gear is welded on it)can get lock up or not
2005 manual starter
Stock drive shaft
Stock crossmember (hole elongated 1/2")
518/46rh trans mount
If going lock up converter need a toggle for easy on/off

That's it. This swap damn near drops in the truck of I new this awhile back would have never gone with a Sharadon trans. The only other issue you have is that the pcm needs to be sent out and flashed for a manual truck(some places can do this) or just unplug C4 harness and ride the engine light or pull the bulb like I'm going to for now. As I go I wll post more stuff up but that's the jist of it for now! Greg has been crucial to the info I have gathered he has pretty much walked me thru this ordeal in a single email :thumb:

There is very little needed to be done to this trans to hold power. Until you clear the 750rwhp range you don't even need the billit drum. I will be doing a red alto clutch set and a shift kit (not full manual) but auto/manual so track I can shift road I just drive. This setup alone should shave a decent amount of time of the 1/4". This trans is almost 60lbs diff easy of a 545rfe and has 1/8 the rotating mass for a standing start. The gear ratios in it are 2.45-1.45-1.1-.69 it will leave just as hard as the 545 if not harder. Also can add a trans brake if I want and really try and brake something. This is going to be a great deal of fun and a cage will deff be soon to follow. All this speed and I want to be able to walk away of something goes south that's for sure. Keep an eye here as more info coming soon with pictures.

I used the trans mount from the 545. It bolts up. It's often mentioned that if driven without through TV cable connected and adjusted correctly it will damage the trans. The TV cable operates a lever that modulates the line pressure in relation to throttle position. With that said, a friend of mine with a heavily modified 440 in front of a 727 has never used a TV cable but shifts manually. I haven't studied the manual enough to make a recommendation. As mentioned I use a TV cable, but still shift manually when playing hard.
