Limited slip issue

So today I pulled in my driveway in 2wd and the truck was spinning (like usual, my driveway is a mess) It ended up stopping while it was spinning and I noticed the drivers side tire was down to the pavement and had stop spinning. Usually the LSD in the truck is pretty stout and keeps both tires spinning, I also noticed when I gave it gas I could hear a groaning whiney noise coming from the diff. Should I be concerned? Im not sure whats normal slippage and noises from the 3rd gen LSD differentials.

If it has a Limited Slip and is not turning both wheels it sounds like it's not working.

What has most probably happened is that one or more of the retaining clips in your clutch pack has broken, not an uncommon problem due to Chrysler's piss poor design..

When my pinion gear nut dropped off my truck and the rear end locked up back in Oct 2013 I think it was, at the repair shop I had asked them to replace the clutch pack and also show me what was wrong. The photo below is not from my truck but is what can happen to cause this. This clip holds a tab on the clutch plates and when they break the clutch plates just spin and not do their job....

This is a link to show how to repair this.. and also has PLENTY of pictures to show the problem and repair procedures ..

I just Did a fluid change and not only did i find out that there was a broken clip stuck to the magnet. Now can i also get just the bearing caps. Looks like the left side has been worn down on the side. Nothing is wrong with the bearings from what i can tell. Just the side of the cap has been worn down due to the clip breaking off and catching the side of the cap till it worn down enough and fell down and got stuck on the magnet. Still rolls fine with no noise but now i think i will just use my car till i get all the parts and fix this right. Might as well get me a dana locker which should be a heck of lot stronger and not wear out as bad. Thoughts?

About 5 or so years ago I was talking to a Chrysler mechanic about broken clips. He showed me a few broken pieces of clips and a bearing cap. He said he used bearing caps out of a salvaged rearend to make the repair Makes me wonder how many repairs have been done in this manner and the customer charged for a complete axle...

The bearing cap is not broken, but since it is slightly worn from what i can tell, but will actually take it apart and look at it, and go from there. I was hoping to get just the two caps since they just hold the bearings in place. I just dont want to take it out, put it back in and take a chance on it cracking. But the Lockers are expensive though

Yea I understand the caps get ground on the inside from the broken clip. The axle is also ground the same amount as the cap. Proper fix would be to replace the axle housing. The caps are machined to match the housing. The jury rigged repair is to use a pair of caps from a different housing.

This is pictures of an undamaged housing.

I looked and the only damage is just to the cap. Not sure how nothing else did not get damaged. The axle is fine. Now where can i get just an axle housing. Most places i looked you have to get a completely rebuilt rear end.

I don't know how you could damage one and not damage the other, If the housing is not damaged you might be able to reuse the caps otherwise the salvage yard is your best chance to finding a pair of caps.

Talked to a machinist today and he told me using caps from a different housing would work but not recommended. Anyway looking at all the prices and if I am going to replace the diff might as well do the bearing. The truck has 118000 miles on it (stored twice while deployed for a year) and Napa has some fully rebuilt that are not to bad priced. Now what is better, 3:92 or 3:55. I really dont tow with my truck and use it mostly as an *** hauler. I may tow a car once in a blue moon, Looking to get the best gas mileage and still have a little fun. I also have my monte and looking to get a hellcat sometime next year for my speed needs.....

Mentioned in post #9 that just replacing the caps wasn't a proper fix. Which gear has a lot to do with what you do with the truck and the size tires you use. 31" or taller 4:56, 31" or shorter 4:10. I use a 4:10 on 30". And have gone as short as 28 without issue.

I dont really tow that much. Looking to make it more of a daily driver. I get around 20 mpg to and from work. Looking to improve on that a little more. One of the best ways is to lower the gear ratio so my engine will run lower rpm's and i will still be able to tow my car. I do have 3:92 in it right now and it feels like i would be able to tow two cars...Also would i have to have a computer hooked to it and have the speedometer re calibrated?

I would never consider using bearing caps from a different diff on my diff, since they are line bored as a unit. That is why the repair manual requires the caps be marked, top and left or right, to keep from improperly reinstalling them. This tells me they don't even need to be mixed up on the same diff.

To me this would be like taking the engine crankshaft main bearing caps off of a different engine, to install on the engine you just replaced the crankshaft bearings.

It's just all that hemi horsepower that makes it feel like you'd want a taller gear sometimes. Don't want to get under it and boggy :thumb:

I kind of want to keep the truck around for awhile anyway. It has been painted twice because of hail so there is no rust on the body and paint is not faded...lol WIfe just gave me the go ahead to save some money and get my hellcat next year. Now that will be a fun Hemi.

Speedo runs off the tone ring bolted to the ring gear. No calibration is needed except for tire size changes. Lower rpm does NOT equal better mileage.... hemi really likes 2100-2300 for cruise.

Whoopsie.....yeah I kinda had a stupid attack there lol I even looked at upgrading to a e-locker a while back and remember seeing that

I haven't had 1 customer call me and tell me of the loss of mpg from going to 4.56.
In fact i have had calls of improvement in mpg
Yep, I am definitely on the side of don't fear the gear crowd......
