I have a 2006 ram 1500 QC 4x4 and I'm making a pile of mods. I was wondering what else you guys recommend???

Here's what I have so far

1. vararam intake
2. NGK 5306 spark plugs
3. Pacesetter long tubes with y pipe
4. Moog upper control arms with ball joint
5. Moog lower ball joint
6. Moog tie rod ends
7. Bilstein 5100 shocks
8. 180 t-stat
9. Predator programmer
10. Borla muffler

Here's what I'm thinking next since the budget is getting slim, I might have enough for one more mod. I was thinking 4.56 gears but I think having someone install them is not gonna be cheap. I was also thinking an E-fan but not sure on that one yet. What else do you guys think?

I would datalog a pass and see how well your boost tracking rpm's. 11 psi is serious business, make sure your tune will support it. Your datalog should show boost tracking your rpm's right up the shift points. If it doesn't, and I suspect it isn't install the double tensioner like Keith built. That will make your boost consistent. If you are not using water Meth injection, you need to start. AFR should be 11.8 which is a touch fat but needed with stock pistons. Any detonation and you will have a excellent chance to build a new motor. Keep in mind that new truck has 10 years of technology on you. But between the boost gears and stall you should have easily beaten him.

Now that I think about it I think max was 8lbs of boost not 11lbs I think 11lbs was my next goal after the crank shaft damper and engine mount which I still haven't done. My AFR does run aroun 11 when on boost. I'm using meth injection. I'm gonna check with Keith on the datalog.

I do think my truck is pretty quick. It's way faster than before I joined the forum that's for sure. Hopefully the datalog gives us some idea. I'll see what Keith thinks. I'm hopping I can keep it from detonating till I get my new house.

Keep in mind stock engine with 6 psi will out down around 410 to the tires. Given the weight and what not that's not gonna push you fast enough for most stuff. Add a cam in there and then you will have some power for sure. The stock cam limits the effectiveness of the boost a bit for sure. Don't worry you will get there.

No doubt in my mind the double tensioner will make a big difference. He's most likely losing boost in the upper rpm's.

Here is something to consider. You have a heavy 4x4 on tires and suspension suitable for off road, but you are evaluating it on how well it does Racing. This is a little like a duck in a cockfight. And you are judging the duck on how well it fights. Try which one gets across the pond first. Go trail riding for the day and you will see how thin the field gets. Good luck there is a lot of folks that will help.

Thanks guys for the input. I was just bummed last night. I know getting a heavy 4x4 to move like I want it to isn't going to be easy. When I bought it I didn't think I would go this route with it otherwise I would have bought a 2wd or something else but since this is what I got I was shooting to be one of the few if not only fast 4x4 hemi's around. I know if we were going off-road I would be ahead of the game. Not sure which route I'll go next. Motor mount, crank dampener and cam shaft and I'm well over a $1000 bucks. I wonder will a new dodge truck still be faster after those mods? Not sure I wanna keep putting more into it or if it's time to bail and get something else.

Excellent questions and they are ones we face continuously when building our trucks. My goals are fairly fixed and have only shifted a little over the years becoming more performance focused. In some aspects it doesn't make a truck better when made to go faster. Everything is a compromise.

I don't know Ethan, but I'll wager his truck is very race focused . And certainly not your everyday 4x4. One of my all time favorites is a 05 lowered AWD sport truck. The owner used all top pieces on engine to suspension. Show quality. And of course it's red....lol

I'm both surprised and impressed...

I decided I'm going to make another mod list or i guess parts list. 1st engine mount and crank pulley. So after that I'm thinking a new cam. As you guys know I want more power mostly for the streets. It needs to still be good for daily driving and the occasional trip here and there.

So what cam size do you guys recommend for what I got? Also what other parts do I need to get along with the cam to make it all happen?

#150 ·
Also what do you guys think of my mpg. My overhead says im getting 9.8mpg. Are these things accurate after all the mods that have been done?

#151 ·
Why are you changing crank pulley? I must have missed something.

#152 ·
Its stock and I'm scared I might spin it. I'm getting one with a key way. The ATI super damper..

#153 ·
Are you having a keyway cut in your crankshaft? If not then it will do no good. Keep in mind that pulley will need to be removed when you do the cam swap.

#155 ·
Didn't know that pulley had to come off. I'll have to save to get both parts and hopefully get them installed at the same time.

#156 ·
So have drilled and tap a hole on the side of the crank snout and have a headless set screw screwed into it for the keyway to slide over? Or is just a hole with a pin stuck in it? Either way, it would engage the keyway slot. This is different from what a machinist would call staking, but would be a better way of doing it. Picture?

Sweet, I'll get one of those for the next cam change. Thanks..
