I'm looking at buying a 2005 2 WD Rumble Bee. 2nd swarm. I'm not familiar with the earlier generation trucks or Pre Eagle Hemi. The truck has a new Jasper engine in it. Total mileage on the truck is 145,000. Engine has less than 1,000 on it since install. A few questions- Does the Pre Eagle engines have the breaking exhaust studs like the newer ones do? What about the transmission? Good and bad? It will be a daily driver. So it won't be extensively modded. Maybe exhaust, and lite tune. Any information is appreciated.

Yes they have the manifold bolts break also just throw a set of pacesetter headers and y pipe. stage 8 bolts or arp and ur good. I have a 05 rumble bee and got 180,000 on transmission and it still runs strong I just recently swapped to 8 speed tho. But the killer on the trans is wot kick downs

Will the electronics run the 8 speed? Or did you do a stand alone? What gears did the trucks come with?

Since it's a new Jasper engine you should be good to go on the Head studs.......key word is SHOULD ...Buy new bolts anyway...never hurts to have spares.

The trans.....it's a crap shoot, for everyone that's gone 500k miles no issue, there's one that crapped out 30seconds after the 1st key cycle of ignition......and a few million in-between, general consensus is 450hp is the threshold, after that you really need to pay attention to how you drive it........No WOT in to OD, avoid the temptation to hard kick it down at 60mph to beat that clown next to you for that lane choice.

4.56 gears are your transmissions best friend, 3.92 ,4.10, 4.30 are groomsmen. Tow haul is a good idea around town.

I've have roughly 110k on my 1st 04GTX(yellow one) I bought new, trans crapped out just under 38k, did some research and learned how to drive it* (copied response from another thread )" now after I did some research and basically followed what Mr Harley has described... kept it from going from 3-4 wot, never let it kick down out of anger, manually shift it from D to 2nd when you want to stretch it's legs so to speak and it's got another 70k miles on "

I've had one of these 3rd Gen rams as a 2-5 day a week daily driver since 04 , seat belt will drive you crazy, dam things never seam to retract, my current Daily 04 has a ghost wiper thing going on, once in a while the wipers make 1 to 3 passes across the windshield , oil pressure gauge drops to 0 then goes full tilt, then comes back to the middle.

two of my 5 boys and my daughter drive a 3rd gen ram as daily drivers, Benny has 345k on his 04 Rumble bee he bought new....original trans, trans was out once to have a 3k stall convertor and a upgraded Valve body ..it's had Mopar's CNC pre-eagle heads and a comp cam 273 in it since late 2012, has a indy Mod man intake on it with a custom top with two 80mm TBs on it, though the years it's had the normal wear issues.
Jacob's 03 QCSB 4x4 SLT , he bought used in 08 with 80k on it, now has 310k on it, 3 trans, every 100k it needed a trans....that truck is as OEM G3 hemi as they get, still has the oem airbox, iron manifolds, and crappy steel wheels(rusted to sh!t steel wheels)
Noreen has two Bee's and a Daytona , the 05 bee has 275k on it, trans was hurting when she bought it @ 265k . Her 04 Bee has had a 518 or a 727 in it since 2010, it hasn't seen "street duty" since 2014. Her Daytona, she bought new has 70k on it , 60k with the stock 5.7 10k with the 392(6.1based) in it....winter has kept her from stretching it's legs out ...but I know it won't last long behind that 392.

two of my other 3 boys have 3rd Gen rams , those are more performance orientated trucks, 1 has a Cummings in it, and both my grandsons have a 3rd gen ram, both daily, both get the crap beat out of them, both have had trans replaced.....

Between us all we fourteen 3rd Gen, five 4th gen rams. 12 out 19 rams are Hemi trucks, and one LA powered 02(with a t56 behind it)

1st cam choice , Comp 260 , or one of crower's cams SKU# 33490 , 33491,33492 , 33493 and up will be hard on a stock 545.

Headers are always good, but with were we've come with tuning on these 3rd gens , we can make as much as 420-430hp through the Iron manifolds.

There is a lot of Good info in this site for the 3rd gen trucks.

@Rays04GTX Thanks for the information. I'm beginning to think maybe this isn't the truck for me. Like you said the tranny is a crap shoot. Or maybe I need to look at swapping either a NAG or 8 speed in it. I had planned on headers and real dual exhaust for it. Thank you for your response.

As much as I dismiss the 545 , it's not a bad trans when the truck is driven as it's meant to be, , it's double edge sword deal, the Heavy QC4x4s are hard on the 545 due to the weight of the truck, the RCSB4x2s the 545 is a great all round trans ....but let's be real here, if you have a RCSB4x2 truck,....it's going to get driven like its a challenger 6 sp and get wrung out alot.

I feel the nag1 is an easier, less expensive route then the 8sp, but the 8sp will return on investment with better fuel millage with in a 2 maybe 3 years depending on miles driven......now the 8sp swap there's more info out there, the nag1 is kind of the forgotten child of the mopar transmissions ....

now it you are a do it yourselfer (IE don't mind shifting) the 518/46RH is as bolt in as you get, no custom Driveshaft, no custom Trans crossmember, T56 is a little more involved, with a lot of the SRT10 truck parts drying up and going through the roof price wise.

Just enjoy the truck for now but save something for a rainy day.

Tell me more about the 8 speed swap. Just a bolt in? Transmission tunnel fabrication? Electronics?

Harley has a Whole thread dedicated to the swap, we've done it on the 14-15's were is much easier. also Mark(Bada44) is another one who has done the 3rd Gen 8sp swap.....those guys can answer that question better.

@ Rays04GTX Thanks for the information. Not to bad of a swap. What about towing with the stock tranny? Any issues there?

545's (this picture was the 3rd trans, currently on my 4th) can do all sorts of things until they don't lol....this is 4400 lbs plus trailer across 150 miles:

as far as bolt in yes the transmission does bolt right up to the block but you gotta swap out flywheel, get new driveshaft, lots of lil odd and ends things and sound german harness for wiring. but my truck has 3.92 gears. but like some other said 4.56 gears are work well and one of the number one mods for 3gen trucks

I'd prefer more of a highway gear. Than something like 4.56s. I think if I buy it, and decide to swap. I'll do a NAG. It's much easier to do.

The a518/46re trans will literally bolt into place of the 545rfe. Factory driveshaft will work and crossmember needs hole elongated 1/2” and cooler lines made. The trans can be done with a full manual or the controller (forget what it was called) and it will drive full auto on its own. They are also cheap to make hood a lot of power for the most part.

Like Mr Lonestar says, he's on his 4th .

it's the same story, for every "4th trans " guy(gal) there's one that has made it to 250k (how I don't know)
My middle kid has "ma and pa" type garage out side of Allentown Pa, a good portion is small farmer guys, he's got a few stingy old Mennonites who put over 250-300k miles on their 03-08's , most of them are original 545's , but remember these guys are the one's that drive a buggy on Sunday and don't know how to go over 55mph, most of the ones that have had to replace their 545 have a lot of hills they climb with 7500-10k trailers.

irony....last Saturday , I went and looked at a 29k mile original Daytona(ram) QC 4x2 , hasn't been driven since 2008...guess why.

There's a place near us called Lorah's they do truck pulls and dirt drag(200ft). There's a RC2wd guy, 08 truck runs a (ric3xrt built) 362ci(5.7 stroker), it's a legit 8k rpm nasty M-Fer.. with a 8sp, D60 ....(seriously no joking) ,5.86's with the 8sp,by the time he hits the 200ft mark.....that truck has gone through 6 of the 8, and never sees 7-8th ,smoked a ATS built 545 on the 1st pass, he's on his 3rd SHR War king 8hp90. him and his father also do some Hill climb stuff with aG3 powered jeep he's a regular at Skien in Norway, Hot springs Arkansas, travels the world beating the crap out of that Jeep, and runs a 8hp90 with 5.38s in the jeep for straight up hill climbing.

The Truck gets 4.88s for 400ft and 500ft tracks.

,

DCX should of put the Nag1 in these trucks from the get go.....
