I've had my truck from new and bought it with the goal of keeping it forever and building it into the perfect truck for me. The lift, interior/exterior mods, wheels, tires & gears are all the result of trial & error until I got it right, for me.
The exhaust was always an issue. The original is in the attic after I took it off within a month of owning the truck. You get to try a lot of different styles of exhausts in 19+ years of ownership. I've had duals coming straight out the back, duals angled down behind the rear wheels, duals under the bed, in front of the passenger rear wheel and even a hidden exhaust, tucked up high under the bed. They were all OK, but never really hit the "sweet spot" for me. After a friend had a Viper, with thru body exhausts, I always wished I could do the same for my truck, but cutting a perfectly good bed gave me nightmares.
A few weeks ago, I grew a pair and dug out the angle grinder. A buddy at the local Meineke helped with the piping. We dry fitted everything to see if the project was feasible, then when it looked like it was, I dug out the angle grinder, die grinder and hand files and set to work. I painted the drilled holes and cut out with rattle can Rustoleum & bed-liner. Once the thru-body was installed, it was back to Meineke to weld it all up. I still have both Cats, so we went with the Black Widow Neighbor Hater "muffler". It's really not a muffler, but the design really does eliminate cab drone. It's not too loud when driven respectfully, but it'll bark when you want attention. Body & plastic fender are mildly warm from exhaust gases, but in no danger of damage or melting.
I now have the, for me, perfect exhaust.
