New member so I apologize if this isn’t in the right section.
I recently purchased a 2005 2500 with the 5.7 hemi. I had a 2003 1500 before. About a week ago I realized I had a major exhaust leak due to broken rear studs on both sides. Studs were broken off into the heads. I was able to drill one out but had no success even getting the other to start drilling.
So the easy solution seemed to be to swap out a set of heads I had sitting around from my 2003. Disassembled the motor cleaned everything up and installed the other heads. Assembled everything else. Went to start the motor and it had a really hard time starting, had to pump the gas pedal to get it to turn over. However it barely wants to idle and hovers around 500rpm rough. You can see the motor is actually slightly shaking when running. Truck ran and started fine prior to swapping heads.
New plugs, wires were put on also. It’s raining at the moment here so I’m at a standstill as it doesn’t fit into my garage. Here’s my big question, since the heads I put on were from a 03 and have the valve springs that are prone to having issues, do those work on a 05? I’m going to pull the valve covers off when it stops raining and visually inspect everything. Also want to see about doing a compression check.
Has anyone had a similar issue or can help point me in direction what exactly I should look for?
I know people might say it’s a fuel issue or misfire. But there no codes in the computer. A fuel pressure test will also come when the rain stops. I know this is a lot of info and could be multiple things. But like I said minus the exhaust leak the truck ran fine before. I may have forgotten something but I think this for the most part describ s my situation. I know there’s simple tests I haven’t been able to yet that can rule out certain things. Just hoping maybe someone has some insight. Any questions or if more info needed let me know. Hoping to figure this out ASAP. Thanks.

unless the 03 heads have a noticeable issue(broken spring, bent valve) Heads are not your issue, they are the basically the same from 03-08. some of the more experienced people will be along soon and will have direction for you to look.

I would double check make sure the plug wires are on correctly, and make sure the pushrods are adjusted correctly and not bent.and coil pack power is plugged in.also check for vacuum leak.
good luck

Ok just checked pressure with the key ON I’m reading about 51/52psi. When it’s “running” it’s reading almost 60 but bouncing around that number plus and minus probably because of the engine shaking. So I have fuel pressure and it’s not bleeding off just sitting. So hopefully I can rule fuel out of the problem?

The 03 heads do not have egr port in the front of the passenger head. If you are using the 05 intake manifold you may have a open egr port...

Pull the covers off and make sure you didn’t pop a pushrod on start up it’s very common for one to dislodge. Make sure plug wires are routed correctly that can cause an issue for sure. Egr shouldn’t be an issue if you had an egr head and manifold you would hear that popping out the front passenger side.

Well pulled the covers off. Sure enough #5 intake rod had popped off. However for some reason my head gaskets failed. Have a nice milky residue inside my valve covers.
Does anyone have any recommendation for doing the final 90* torque on the larger bolts. There’s really no room inside the engine compartment to get a full 90*. So time to start disassembling. Again

I meant he may have a open egr port on the manifold. The 03 head has no provision for the port and wouldn't be making noise.

I think that when I did my head gaskets in the engine compartment that 90 measured out to be 105 FP...... unfortunately the head bolts are a one-time-use they are torque to yield... And use a multiple layer steel head gasket.

The ksst engine I used head bolts on I think I torqued them to 110ft/lbs..

After I torque the heads to the specified rating, I used a paint marker to make a reference mark and then turned them 90 degree's, even if you have to take two shots at it. Also, did you possibly install the headgaskets backwards, upside down, or on the wrong side?

Ive seen the use of a reference mark before. I thought about it but didn’t. I was able to get one at 90* and gauged that torque at just over 100ft/lbs. I did it in the right order, and I made sure the baskets were aligned correctly. I’m going to pull the heads today and look at the gaskets to see possibly where they failed.
I’ll try to get a reference mark on the bolts
I know I need to use new bolts and gaskets.
And I’m curious if anyone knows why a pushrod would come out of the rocker shaft? Maybe there’s something else I can check while I have it all open again?i had checked the rods for damage and straightness and they seemed straight and undamaged. Wish me luck. And other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Another quick question, do any of the bolts needs thread sealant because they go into the water jacket? I didn’t notice it on any of the bolts the first time I pulled the heads. Curious if anyone had a drawing or diagram that specified which ones and what sealant if needed. Thanks again.

It’s common for the rods to pop like that. They will seem seated bit reallly are of to the edge and when you start it they pop out. This time around put valvetrain back on and hand rotate the motor around 2 times and make sure they all move issue free. Gaskets just make sure you get them on the correct side writing facing up for sure and there is a left and right gasket.

Maybe pull a spark plug on each hole to find the leaking cylinder.
