I freed up my exhaust

Since freeing up my exhaust i have been experiencing a lot of popping noise coming out of my tail pipes. What would be the easiest way to check for any exhaust leaks? I read about a can of some type of smoke that can be sprayed in the throttle body but am hesitant to do anything like that without getting any advise from this club. Also, since its freed up what would the ballpark cost be to make some tune adjustments to compensate for the greater flow i caused by taking off the cat converter? And, if not tuned while having this greater flow, do i run the risk of messing up any part of my Hemi engine?

Input on any of these issues will greatly be appreciated.

Smoke generators are used for emission system testing, the PCM is great at compensating for most of the mods that are done. But to actually know your Air/Fuel (A/F) ratio and to tune you will need to install a Wideband A/F gauge. We have excellent venders on the forum. I choose to show Summit because I can show the product I am referring to and not just a home page. To check for exhaust leaks you need to get under the vehicle and check manifold and exhaust joints back to the mufflers. New cats and mufflers often will make tinkling/popping noises during the first few heat cycles. I'm not sure what you are describing, maybe just the rumble/popping of a very open exhaust on deceleration?? There are many different methods of tuning from stand alones to various forms of piggybacks. The most favored custom tunes among the Ram folks are the Diablo CMR, SCT and PCM reflashes. I use a combination of SuperChip "Canned" tune and a PSC1 piggyback inconjunction with a High Idle Mod and will be trying a stand alone tuner in parallel with the OEM PCM shortly. I recommend going slow focusing on one mod at a time, sorting everything out as you move forward toward an established goal for your truck. Good luck, plenty of folks here to help you.

Without a smoke machine to fill exhaust pipes with smoke another easy way is to get a towel an old one fold it up a few times and have someone he it tight over your exhaust pipe while running it will cause a pressure build up in the exhaust and and leaks should be very evident by making loud whistle or even popping sounds only hold there for 10-15 sec the. Release and do again always at idle it will get hot

As for tuning if all you did was remove Catt your fine the tune needs no adjusting the noise you are hearing may be from the slightly less back pressure on decel that allows small amounts of raw fuel into the exhaust that ignites and makes mini backfire type sounds kinda like a manual car periodically does I'm just guessing

Easiest way i found to check for leak's is a shop vac. Hook it up to the tail pipe and seal it up, (if you have dual tip's plug the other off) you'll hear every leak you have. (You may have to try an isolate the noise of the shop vac) Best part is the exhaust is cold and no burning your hand.
