hey guys, i've been getting some serious rattling from my dash. i've got an '06 with a flowmaster super 44 dumped before the rear. when the truck is in mds mode, it rattles something but then when it switches back to all 8, it either rattles w/e it is faster or its something else rattling. idk what it is. used too i could just stomp on it and let it roar for a couple of seconds while driving and then it would go away for awhile. now it's becoming harder and harder for it to go away, it's driving me crazy, and idk what to do

have a friend drive your truck, while you try to pinpoint the noise.

alrighty i did that. i had my bro drive my truck while i moved every which a way trying to figure out where the sound was coming from. it's definitely not coming from the passenger side, it's coming from the driver side and its 2 distinct noises. one only rattles when im in mds and the other when im accelerating. i looked up under the steering column i found a few suspects but nothing that i could say was causing it. a lot of the wiring and metal up under there is loose enough to where its hard to pin point it

well i think the engine is causing something to vibrate. it sounds like whatever thats vibrating is coming from inside and the reason i think the engine is causing it is the noise stops when i take my foot of the gas, and the noise changes exactly when it switches out of mds to 8 and vice versa. i just dont know whats doing all the rattling. i love my truck and i really enjoy driving it but all the rattling quells my feelings when driving pretty quick.

it kinda sounds like my exhaust may be causing it but the noise sounds like its inside and i've still got oem from the engine to the y pipe. i've still got warranty but idk if chrysler will touch it

Phil-In your photo it looks like your truck is smiling at the Magnum. Move them a little closer together so they can kiss, and if things go right in the garage, the hatch on the Magnum could suddenly open in a few months and a little Nitro may pop out.

how do i get to the plate? im thinkin about just taking some electrical tape and tape up all the electrical parts as tight as i can, try to eliminate them from the problem. how can i pop off the dash? everybody says they're held in by tabs but where do u start or whatever?

On the bottom/underneath of the big plastic piece there should be 2 screws (1 to either side of the hood latch). I believe there is a third hidden up underneath to the left of the e-brake pedal. After those are out it pops out from the bottom up. The metal plate is behind it. With the plastic off you can get a better view to see if anything is hitting the back of the plate or if it's loose. I had a connector from the alarm wires that was hitting the back of it just hard enough to make a strange sound when I hit a bump. Use zipties and secure them to something, not tape. The shop that installed the alarm taped the bundle together and it came undone (causing the sound), but they did ziptie other parts together.

I guess they ran out of zips.

well ima have to wait until i can work with the door open without getting soaked cause all its been doing is raining
Image
. all it's been doing is rain and drizzle for almost the past week.

On taking that plastic cover off I may have forgot one thing, if it binds on the left side, there may be another screw around the side of the dash. If so, just pop off the cover on the side of the dash (that faces the door).

well i popped off the top of the dash last night where the vents are and i couldnt see anything there. i havent been able to get the rest off yet but i think im going to try today when i get back from getting gas. my sister txted me today to get gas cause its probably going to shoot up close to 5 dollars after today because of the oil refineries shutting down. she's probably right though because her husband is kinda high up in murphy oil and naturally he'd be telling her this

i havent been able to take the dash out so i tried to see what the nearest dealership could do about it. i took my truck in for a weatherstrip seal and a couple of suspension problems. after they were done with it the guy in service/parts said that they ordered what was needed and said the rattling was because my exhaust was dumped and it bouncing the sound from the pavement up to the truck was causing the rattling. the guy even told me that (verbatium), "we shouldnt even have looked at it because of what you've done to it." all i've done is 3rdstrike cai, cut mufflers and resonators off and replaced with a super 44 2 outlet dumped b4 the rear axle, and sparkplugs (he didnt even know about the plugs i know). it pissed me off when he said that cause i know they damn well should still look at it cause my warranty isnt voided. thats a load of s***t!

if i get another remark like that i think i'll drive the extra miles to another dealership

Hey Cipher

You might try checking up under the carpet around the tranny hump. For the 6 months I had a rattle that would come up under the same conditions as you are describing. Turns out I had a couple bucks worth of pennies and dimes and nickels that had fallen behind the ashtray where I keep them, then made it down to the hump, then worked their way under the carpet. May be a longshot, but it's another avenue to explore.

thanks osu, i looked up under there and found some pennies but the sound is still there

. funny thing, is this sound doesnt rear it's ugly head when im in tow or have o/d off. only does it when im doing normal driving. it'll change as my exhaust changes. example: if im driving in all 8 and it starts rattling, it'll sound like it's vibrating at a high speed and as i let off the gas some and let it go into mds, the vibration will get slower and slower as im letting off a little of the gas and then when mds kicks in, it starts vibrating in sync with it

you got something that vibrates at a certain exhaust sound frequency, i have the same problem but mine is at WOT
i don't know what it is yet but i will change the exhaust tuning and see if it still does, it comes from under the dash for sure

Old Garage tip that might help raise truck just enough so you can get at all the exhaust then with Gloved hand rap exhaust from back to front, vary frequency of raps to see if you can create a similar sound.

Another possibility is Engine Oil, the MDS system is really critical as far as oil and its viscosity, also newer Hemi engines have that "BIG" filler cap that loves to collect condensation and dump it into the sump, so a Oil cleaner supplement cycled through the engine then drained seems to get rid of most of the sludge that this condensation builds up.

Hope that Helps, I know I hate squeaks, rattles, and other strange noises coming from my rig too
