Hemi pup, you are really good with that stuff man.
I got some prices for the plain billet 'bars' design that I like.
The price for one made from 1/4" stainless is $67.xx my cost but 10 was about $35 each. The guy said that if it was made from 1/8" stock it'd be way cheaper. The cost is so high because of so much cutting with the laser. I'll have another quote on Monday.
thanks,

To be honest, I would think that 1/8" would be more than enough for the application. Being stainless, even less would work as well especially if it could be mounted in front of the black plastic insert that is there now. It's mearly for visual and not any structural effect and the thinner would be more than acceptable.

Check this link and you'll see that the 1/4" is 3 gauge, the 1/8" is 11 guage (which a lot of SS door hinges are made out of this size).

Personally, I would lean towards the 14 or 16 gauge.

Hopefully some others can chime in here with their thoughts.

Pup do you think 1/8 would work with out the plastic back? I've taken mine out,the insert I have now mounts in the factory holes where the insert is.

I'm no structural engineer, that's for sure, but I just measures a couple of stainless steel hinges I have and they are 1/8" thickness and are VERY strong. I honestly think that 1/8" is more than enough for these inserts.

Just my thoughts.

I think where the consern is if they are only 1/8th inch thick they will sit way back inside of the factory scoup. The black plastic one is much closer to 3/8th as is the billet insert that some of us have all ready bought that wher designed to mount over the black orignal insert. Rancher has modified mine and a few others so that the will fit back into the factory scoup after you remove the black insert but there is now way original way to mount them. Some had tabs welded on them most have just glued them in place.

Hmmm... "I see" said the blindman. I don't have such a hood so I don't know exactly how the inserts are mounted in place. If I could see how the original plastic insert is mounted I would understand it much better.

I guess I'm looking at the final cost more than anything else. Welded Hemi mentioned that 1/8" thickness would cost "way cheaper". Perhaps cheaper than the 1/4" would be 1/8" with some sort of "standoff" welded on OR tabs that could be designed onto the outer edges of the insert and bent over?

Again, I don't know how they are mounted so I can't say anything really.

Pup, the original one has plastic studs that stick through 4 holes and has sheet metal nuts that hold it down. Pretty cheesy crap, cause as soon as you take the nuts off, you strip the plastic studs out and have to get a new one normally.

I'm only guessing, but does the attachment points look like the tabs below?

Pup

That is correct, but I think you have them located in the wrong places. Not really sure. I will check mine tomorrow and take some pics, unless someone else has some already

Thanks, so if the idea of "tabs" is correct, then there are several ways to deal with the designing of these inserts.

Appreciate the help.

Guys, we're well on our way to having a really good design thanks to pup.
I was thinking that it'd be a 2 piece design.
The polished part then the mounting part which will act as a spacer also. I think welding the 2 together will be best. I'd like to weld threaded studs or drill/tap onto another mild steel plate for mounting then weld the 2. I will consult an expert that I know on this.
What do you all think of this idea??
I know I may have to paint the spacer but I don't see a good way out of that.

southern thunder, i can get a lot of powder coated colors. gomango is a tough one that we're still working on, right now it'd be really $$ cause it'd be a 2 step process with pricey powder.
i love what pup did with the red billet design and shiney hemi insert.
