The wife and I finally sent in our absentee ballots. I first went to our county registar's office before I left Virginia and asked for absentee ballots. And was told my wife and I were classified inactive, strange since we have voted in every election. Then was given printed forms to request our absentee ballots which needed to be filled out and mailed in. No problem, I carried the forms with me to the PI and we filled them out and mailed them through my local VFW Post through the US Embassy mail system. The Virginia Registar's office recieved the forms in a week and emailed me that they had mailed the ballots back to us. We waited and waited, no ballots. So two weeks ago I emailed the registar's office and told them we did not recieve the mailed ballots. So they sent an email form for us to fill out and send back requesting email ballots and to state we did not recieve the mailed ballots. These forms are security based PDF forms that cannot be saved with information filled in. So you fill them out and print the form then scan the printed form back to a file and email the .jpg file. No problem except I don't have a printer/scanner. Going to an Internet Cafe is not a option due to the forms having our personal information in them. So finally found a friend that could print and scan for us and we got the ball rolling again. For some reason my laptop which has been dead and just brought back to life by replacing it's memory chip. Another long story in a foriegn land would not connect to her printer. So I had to use my friends laptop and fill in the forms again and print/scan them. Then it seemed she had a connection failure and we had to load the forms into her desktop so the scanned (jpg) files could be put back on my laptop to email back to the registar's office. Round one. Then the registar's office sent us the actual email ballots and we did the whole process again to actually vote. Anyway we got it done, only 20+ email exchanges with the registar's office. Two mornings at a friends house trying to get various computer combinations to talk to one another. And did I mention her computers are in German? Like I said it ain't always easy...... but our votes are in...
