Just Monkeying Around...

Hey everyone I'm still alive...but truck is still dead for now...but not much longer.

I've had more health issues, PTSD acting up worse than ever, and probably enhanced from the added stress levels of still paying off my truck while it still is not drive able. But that should change shortly.

Back in April, I responded to a Craigslist ad for a fresh 545RFE stage 2 build and an ATI converter that claimed never to have had oil in it. All for the unbelievable price of $500. He said he bought it for his son in March 2013 but his son ticked him off and wouldn't talk to him. So 25 months later he decided to try and recoup some money from it.

Every time I called I could only leave a message or text and after 2 weeks he got back to me via TEXT.
He claimed I was the only person to reply to his ad so it was mine. He took all EIGHT ads from Gainsville to Daytona down and I was HAPPY.

Then the nightmares with him started. To shorten up this essay, he has been in and out of the hospital 4 times since April, and he wouldn't give me his home address because he is away for weeks at a time and was afraid of someone robbing his house which sits in the woods a half mile off the road.

Last Friday he got out again and told me he had to come to Lakeland for business. I was SHOCKED when he called yesterday and asked to meet up.

Finally all my efforts paid off when I saw this beautifully saran wrapped shiney new tranny & converter in his SUV. I JUMPED (yes I even surprised myself here), shook hands, transferred the package, paid him and left...Time spent doing all this...about 4 minutes.

Now all I have to do is wait for the rain to stop long enough to install it. I figure it should be done by Aug 1st at this rate.

Well done, you might consider having a shop do it as it takes them only 3-4 hours and be done with it. It'll need a quick learn done at a shop anyway.... Good luck..

She has been on jack stands in the driveway for 3 months and I'm too "Old School" for that. Scott has never R+R a tranny so it will be a good learning experience for him. But thanks for the advice.

That's how I was with mine. It was a beast, but I got it in there. Not sure I will ever do it again.
All I know is an old school power glide is much lighter then these monsters. I could change those out in a few minutes. Got real good at it.

You must have never changed an old cast iron PG out of a 1950 Chev with the enclosed drive shaft in a field, with only a bottle jack. I did my first one at age 12 or 13 for $15 and a '49 Chev field car...CRAP...My age is starting to show here... Not really 'cause Nathan is still older by a couple years but not many...

Rebuilt my first engine at 15 in a Rambler. Got real good at using plasti-gauge on that 6 cyl. Got paid a whopping $100.

Yeah you got a few years on me. The worst I ever did was changing out my engine up in NY, started the project Dec. 26th, Dec. 27 we got 3 ft of snow. The car didn't fit into the garage and the carriage doors only closed to the car. So we put a tarp over both and packed snow up underneath to keep the howling wind out. Then used a bbq grill to try and keep from freezing. What a fun project that was. Had to use a blow drier to thaw the fuel lines out before we could get it to start. But, I had the car up and running (open headers, no hood) in time to go back to school (17 yrs old) Jan. 3. Good times!

I understand old school, I can't stand having my truck out of sight or someone working on it.. But with that said I'm too old to roll around on the ground wrestling with a heavy *** transmission. I'm very lucky to have a fabrication/ automobile repair shop owned by a good friend. He allows me full run of the shop along with a helper when needed. When I installed the 46RH I did it on a four post lift with a trans jack. Since this hadn't been done before I wasn't sure what problems I would have and no way would I have attempted it without full support. Good luck..
