Florida salt water fishing

Looking for some basic saltwater pier fishing 101.

Have spincast and spinning rods and just plain don't know how to fish.

Oh, I can put a shrimp on my hook, dangle it off the pier and occasionally some unknown species will commit suicide on my line. But, when it comes to knowing the correct way to rig up my line, anything and everything go's. I guess I have been bottom fishing. The only thing I consistently catch is rocks and then I lose my hook, sinker and some line. Bought some spoons and lures to try. Took them out for a trial run, lost them in the rocks.

Can anybody help me, please...………………..

I haven't done a lot of pier fishing but have done a lot of beach fishing. I can give you some advice on beach fishing, which i use the same tackle on the piers.

1. You need a good rod and reel, reel doesnt really matter just what every you feel comfortable throwing. I use a 8' and a 10' catfish rod and an big spinning reel on both.
2. depending on the fish you are trying to catch, you will need heavy duty line, I use 40 lbs test line.
3. use a swivel with a clip and tie in onto the end of the line.
4. clip a 12"-18" steel leader with a 40+ lbs strength onto the clip.
5. also clip a 3 oz pyramid weight onto the clip.
6. at the end of the leader clip a no. 3 or 4 J-hook or catfish hook.
7. use what ever bait you like, I have used live shrimp, cut mullet, cut squid, and sand fleas.
8. Throw it out as far as you want. Tighten up the line. set back and wait.

Using this set up I have caught several Red Drums, a Sheepshead, several Gafftopsail Catfish, several Hardhead Catfish, several Stingrays, a Lemon Shark, several Blacktip Sharks, a Bonnethead Shark and a Hammerhead Shark. These were caught off the beach in Alligator Point FL.

Yes set it up like stated above. I prefer to use a dual line leader this way one line has the weight and the other with bait is free to float around with current or swim.

Thanks Aaron.

The way I understand is:

1. Tie a swivel clip onto 40# line.
2. Attach a 12" to 18" 40# steel leader to the clip.
3. Attach a 3 oz. pyramid to the same clip.
4. Attach a # 3 or 4 " J" hook to the end of the leader.

Is that right?

How do you attach the hook to the steel leader?

Thanks Keith,

Do you attached the weight to a leader like you do the hook?

Are they both the same length?

It seems like they would get tangled up.

They will 1 in 20 throws but the weight sinks fast and the line floats. It’s a good way to be able to feel the line of something hits it. Most times there is a short lead and then a long lead on same setup

Do you put the weight or the hook on the short leader?

I have used the same set up Keith is talking about several times too. The one I said was easier to explain to start out with but Keiths way is easy too. I would put the weight on the short leader.
