Painting over oem chrome plated plastic grill

I want to paint my OEM chrome grille on my 07. Will paint bond to the chrome surface? If so, what kind of prep is required?

If I rmember rignt it's plastic. Start with 600 grit wet sandpaper then 1000 grit and some laquer thinner and it should be ready to prime.

It's actually a VERY thin sheet of almost foil like material... sanding too much will sand thru that material... just scuff it a little with 1,000 grit, a really quick wipe down of laquer thinner, plastic primer, then paint.

This is on my mod list as well. Im either gonna sand thru the chrome or spend $75 at Certi fit for a paintable one. Gonna color match the grill.

As cheap as the replacement grille surround is, and the fact it is easier to paint, you would be better off getting a new one than painting the chrome one. It will eventually flake off the chrome one, regardless of whether or not you use adhesion promotor, simply because chrome does not let paint stick worth a crap.

Yeah that is what happened to me and I had the pros do it

Did last close to 5 years though but bought a replacement black for $49 and just had it painted blue just over a week ago
