paint and body cost $$$$$

thought I had found a reasonable place to get my truck done. I really want to shave the antenna, tailgate and doorhandles and have my flames painted on. But this was what I just got back so now I don't know, Does this seem a little high or am I just too cheapfrugal

The estimate to do the tailgate came to $1100.00. The doors and antenna came to
$4300.00. The additional for the flames (if done at the same time as doors and
antenna) came to $1500.00.

I'd keep shopping! If you want I'll ask my body shop down here what they would charge!

That seems like a rip too me, but I had my work done to my 1994 Ram back in 2000. I wanna say it was $2500 or so to shave the tailgate handle, gas door and bed stake holes, repaint the entire truck in Viper Red, to include removing the bed, and replacing the front and back glass. The another $1000 to put the flames on.

PM Rancher, he know a good body shop somewhere around his area. And recommends them frequently.

When it comes to body work there are two important things to remember.

1. If it's cheap, it may not be good

2. If it's good, it will not be cheap

Take a moment to think of (or go out and price) the cost of materials now.

Example:

And this is for quality materials, ie PPG,3m ect

1 roll 3/4 in masking tape- $2.75

5 gals cheap thinner for clean up of spray guns
$67

Masking paper, 18 in wide roll- $41

Sandpaper, wet 12 sheets 600 - $14

High quality body filler- $36 / gal

Polyester fill putty w/activator- $22 (1 tube)

PAINT:

Primer surfacer: $65-120 / gal

Activator- $40

Base color- depending on brand and color tint
1 qt- $40-70 average
1 gal- 180+

Clear coat- about the same

To do a flame job on a vehicle you will burn through at least $100 worth of tape and mask minimum....

You can DIY...if you have all the tools and a suitable place to do it. If the shop you got your estimate from has it's own paint mixing system think of the money he invests in it each month to replace bases and tints.

Just trying to bring things to light for you, thats all.

Your choice....

What George said without mentioning all the labor that goes into the prep work before paint and the body work on the shaving.

Are you getting fire or flames painted? If fire the 1500 a good price, for just flames seems pricy. For shaving tailgate look into a colision shop to see if you can get a better price. Just my 0.02 worth.

Wow is that the going price for airbrushed true fire flames in the northeast ? I can promise you it's more than that in Texas. This message has been edited.
