I put in LEDs that do exactly the same thing, along with some other weird behavior. They never turn completely off, unless it sits over night and they aren't turned on. For some reason I don't mind them being dim while driving at night. As for keeping both of them on, I use the interior light wheel by the headlight switch to control them instead of pressing them in. I'm not sure if it's because I used cheap LEDs or the different load on the circuit.

Standard incandescent bulbs are not polarity dependent (+/-) like LEDs. To that end, you may have them in backwards.

Our overhead map & dome lights are controlled on a dimmer circuit, and this will cause problems with the LED operation unless a properly sized resistor (100 ohm/1 watt will do nicely) is soldered across the two terminals (not for the uninitiated); use a proper soldering iron for electronic work and DO NOT use the acid core solder for your radiator.

I have replaced my overhead lights with LEDs, and I can read a book from the light they put out. I used Cool White as the color, and got them from SuperBrightLEDs.

There are a number of threads on this site from members that have done this.

With proper planning, they will give you much enjoyment.
