Pinion Nut Recall Expanded

Looks like they're expanding the rear axle pinion nut recall from late last year to include up to 2012 on the Ram 1500s. There a some other Chrysler vehicles on it, too.

Chrysler recalling 278,222 trucks and SUVs over bad rear axles

Is that a split pin?

Years ago they used to use a retainer that would have the tips bent down into the slots on the crown nut - which is what the had originally installed on my truck, not sure if all of the vehicles have those or they changed them.

In my case, they did not use any kind of lock tight nor did they compress (or oval) the nut nor anything else. When they pulled out everything at the shop when mine was repaired, you could see that the nut was normal, there was no indications of lock tight anywhere on the threaded end of the pinion gear shaft nor was there anything on the nut.

No problem. I hadn't seen it until I saw another post on a different forum, so I can't take full credit. For all of us 09-12 guys, I'd recommend checking the VIN throughout March. My understanding of the article is Dodge isn't officially starting the recall until then.

There was a new item telling about the fact there was going to be a recall but no details. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

A new nut is called for when assemblying the pinion. The best I can figure is the new nut has loktite applied to it's thread and it's the way the factory can say "loktite the nut". The two replacement nuts I have, one OEM and another NAPA both have loktite on their threads and a indentation on a flat. Looks sorta like a punch mark. I also loktite the nut myself just to be double sure. Anyway that's my take on pinion nuts.
