Check engine light

Ok guys, question. Tonight, out of no wheres, my check engine light comes on. My truck has the message center in the dash. My question is- if I have an issue causing my check engine light to come on shouldn't I get a message explaining it??

I often wondered that too! Probably so you need to go somewhere (Ram is hoping your dealer) and spend money getting a diagnostic and whatever it is repaired. It would be nice, like you said, if the code/problem popped up in the message center. Do you have an O'Reilly auto parts near you? They have a code reader you can use for free.

It will return as soon as it is found again during the key on diagnostics. I know mine did it each time my oil pressure switch failed.

Find an auto parts store that has a code reader, they can connect it to your truck, usually for free, and quickly let you know what codes are saved. Most are emissions related.

Ahhh the wonders of touch screens... some years ago an incident like that would most likely have been a loose gas cap.
