Exclamation

Find one with a full 4 watt output, SSB, Power Mic, Use full 1/4 wave antenna, Keep SWR as close to 1:1 as possible...and if you want a little extra push - a high quality linear amplifier .

Of course I never had one like that .

Sent a message to Dalton he said the Cobra-25 with the power tune is good for 5miles or the cobra 29-ltd for 10 mike reach. He also said these are the smaller radios so they fit in places better than most. He is a truck driver so I would assume these are best bang for buck and distance.

I had a Standard Horizon 29 years ago. Worked great and had a bit over legal output. Makes me wonder what I did with it.

I've run Cobra 148 GTLs with a 100 watt bilinear amp for a number of years. The SSB is a lot of fun. You'll need a noise canceling mic. I'm in Houston, TX and have talked to Canada, Ca., Puerto Rico, Florida, and a few places in between. Clear cold nights seem to work best for skip.

Full wave antennas are best for range, but there as been so much improvement in them that you can pick and choose which suits your purpose best.

Oh, I had the Cobras max tuned. It helps for short distances. We used them at the deer lease for years, but since, the cell phones have taken over.
