518 transmission on a 4th gen is it possible

Has anyone swapped a 518 transmission on a 4th gen tam running the crappy 5/6 speed transss if yes what exactly is needed for the swap 2wd ram

Stand alone tcm?
Does 65rfe driveshaft fit?
Does the crosssmemeber fit?
Would i need adapter to bolt in onto the block?
How would i get this tranny to shift ?

What exactly is needed to make this 518work?
Goal is to hit 800-900hp so need something that would hold this power dont want to go 4l80 route

Welcome to HTC california.

You might want to look into California emissions inspections and high performance parts laws...

X2

But the 518 is the same length as the 65RFE, the drive shaft is the same spline count.
CharonBlk07 his a thread here and on ram forum about swapping in a 4l80E, his write up is helpful when it comes to how he made the trucks PCM deal with the trans swap.

My Nephew's 09 we swapped in a Rossler Terminator 6 glide, and his buddies 2014 QC has a Roosler TH400 with a transfer case both trucks we used HPT tuners software , My Nephews truck we switched it over to manual in the tune, and it's working great, his buddies QC we had to leave it auto like what CharonBlk07 had to do.
over the winter if I keep my 2014 I'm going to have to do something either 518 or a T56 not sure yet.

As for bolting I’m and up it should bolt right up to the truck and hit the factory mount locations since the 65rfe is the same as the 45/545rfe. Tuning will likely need HP timers like stated. You will have to custom make a shifter lever for the trans that will accept the snap on ball style or convert to cable floor shift. If you go full manual VB you won’t need the Throttle valve cable if not you will need to attach it to the gas pedal somehow. Coolerlines are easy to make. The trans can be built to take whatever you wanna throw at it also. I am pushing well over 700 thru mine now holding fine.

Deff check your local laws though unless it’s going to be a weekend race car and not daily driven you may have some issues depending on where you live over there.

I’ve seen a few people have issues getting the computer to work. I know one guy on a Facebook group page was doing a manual 4l80 swap and the computer just wouldn’t work out for him. It’s seems to be hit or miss unfortunately. There are several people on the NADodge Facebook page have them, I think Shane Roop is one, Kurtis Holland is another if you get on that group and search names

I dis the 4l80 on mine with a stand alone computer but was having way to many issue truck would go into limp mode
We swapped to a different 4l80 same problem rebuilt 4l80 same problem swapped to different torque converters same problem gapped and ungapped the the torque converter from flywheel sane problem replaced the harness from new stand alone computer which was already new when installed rechecked rewired all wiring same problem truck into limp mode never figured it out that is why im searching into a different trans were possibly it could be easier to do than the 4l80

One thing we did not do of part of the install was mess with the tune of the truck since i was using a stand alone computer and i have diablo so it was pointless trying to disable oem transmission check engine light cannot be done on diablo we tried didnt work so maybe those codes were Causing truck to go into limp mode and this would only happen on wot regular driving it would shift perfect but ended up selling it since we never found the solution and didnt swap to hptuners

Using a stand alone pcm to manage the engine it doesn't matter what transmission is behind it. If it is going into limp mode then it is a problem with engine management. If the truck is registered in California then you have to manipulate the stock pcm to be stand alone and still pass inspection. Recently a member did nothing more than change the year of his pcm and could nolonger pass Cal inspection. Strange place..
