The Quest for More Towing Power

Iíll start by introducing the truck Ė itís a 2004 ram 1500 quad cab long box 5.7 v8 with 3.92 gears. She has 66,000 miles. I use the truck for hauling the camper, daily driver in the winter, and hunting. Currently the camper with all my junk is about 5,000 LBs - ish. Iím looking to squeeze some extra power out of the 5.7 to help me get up some of the hills in my area and to cut down the overall struggles. Can the truck manage just fine as isÖ.? yeah, sure! but I know the potential for more power is there.

Iv considered many options. From installing a cam to swapping engines with something a little more powerful like a 6.1 SRT or maybe even swap over all the guts out of an 2009 and Iv even looked at stroker kits. But I thought Iíd see what everyoneís thoughts are and to see if anyone else has done any swaps or cams or builds that might have some input for my quest for more towing power. Iím really open to whatever. I have plenty of mechanical experience so installing a cam, engine swaps, and whatever else doesnít scare me. But Iím not looking for drag race type performance and screaming high RPMs. Just a little extra to get me and my **** down the road a little easier.

all opinions are welcomed. but as disclaimer, Iím not interested in purchasing a different truck. I kind of like this truck 😊.

Thanks

Welcome to HTC. Tell us about the truck, 4x4? What size tires?

I've got pretty good midrange torque with my stroker, and I've got a larger high end power cam. With a torque based cam and appropriate stall convertor and the those listed mods, I'm sure you could pull a tree over

Welcome to HTC.

For more towing power, 4.56 gears are a must have. The cam, cold air intake and headers can be installed later if you want too.

thank you everyone for the welcomes.

sorry I should have mentioned. the truck is a bone stock 04 quad cab long box 5.7 4x4. for tires it has 265/70/r17 i think that comes to being a 31.6 inch tire.

I have been kicking around the idea of 4.56 but Im curious what my highway RPMs will be. does anyone have any data on that?
