I own a 2004 Ram 1500 reg cab 4x2, 5.7 hemi.

A few months ago I started hearing an unfamilar noise under the hood. It sounds like a knarling, bearing type of whine..My alternator is 1/8 to 1/4 in right side of center, could it be an alternator bearing or something in the power steering? What do you Mopar heads think it is? Thanks in advance..

Welcome aboard Poolshooter - we're glad you joined us!

Is the noise just on start up, or continous? First guess would be the altenator... had one die on my '05 and the noise you described is pretty much what mine sounded like.

Welcome, does the noise change with engine speed? There are also idler pulleys that can have a bearing go bad.
