I installed a Spartan cam with 6.1 springs and manley 6.1 length pushrods on a motor that's sitting on a stand. Everything looks fine, rods seem to be seated well and all the retainers are good.

What I'm getting, and I'm not even sure if it's a problem, is when I hand cranked it, cylinder 1 or possibly 3 has a louder valve sound than the others, like the valve slams shut where the others just shut.

I set the timing by using the 12 o clock position on the cam gear, and the Pentastar logo at 2 o clock at the crank shaft. At this point, cylinder 1 was at TDC. It's not an adjustable gearset.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated, thanks all.

Garage
With it timed correctly and all the push rods seated, I don't see much that could be wrong. If you wanted to I suppose you could pull the spark plugs and do a compression check, spinning the motor using it's starter and a battery. Thinking out loud.

When you change things like a cam, push rod length, or valve stem height, you change the valve train geometry. This changes the lifter pre-load height. It can take the motor running, for the lifter to get used to its new setting. Usually a non event.

Sounds good, thanks guys.

Yea, I ended up pulling a plug from each and hand cranking it again, narrowed it down to the 7th exhaust valve and it was doing that clank sound exactly when the rocker arm put pressure on it. After a few turns though it got quieter, I just lubed up the springs and guides with some leftover mobile1 and it was turning perfect and free with no abnormal sound, including 7th exhaust valve.
