Engine not smooth

Hey guys,

having a problem with my 2003 392 stroker, when goin WOT the engine 'stammers' around 5000 rpm, it's down on power also (butt dyno).

I haven't done much to the truck lately only added magnaflow cats recently, when I installed the cats I also did a couple of WOT pulls and no problem whatsoever.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this? The truck also starts a bit harder than usual, normally it fires right up without even touching the throttle, now it takes a couple of seconds for it to start.

Thanks, Christof.

Christof do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Is your pressure keeping up with demand? AFR should also swinging around. How do the plugs look?
Are you using shorty wires? Has it gotten cold?

Fuel pressure looks OK, will double check today. AFR seems normal, I am running shorty wires and it's gotten a bit colder but nothing extreme, been running the shorty wires for years now, even during a lot colder winters without problems.

Are there other options for the shorty wires besides going back to the stock spiderweb of plugwires?

Yes, you can upgrade to the 06+ dual coils. You will need the newer valve covers, coils and there is a conversion plug that will plug into the 03 harness and fit the newer coils or cutoff the 03 plugs and splice the newer pigtail plugs in their place. Moe's had the whole kit listed at one time. But if you can go to a salvage yard and get the parts it is the cheapest route. I bought salvage yard bits and pieces from DodgeTalk classifieds many years ago. 3rdstrike has the kits available

Cold weather will magnify any underlying electrical issues. Freezing weather will magnify electrical and fuel issues.

Definitely check all your ignition electrical connections and grounds first.

Does Belgium switch to a winter blend fuel?

Oh yeah, Vrolijk Kerstfeest.

Hey guys, sorry for the superlate reply :-). Finally finished moving house and have a bit of time on my hand :-)

Thanks for all the tips and when the weather gets warmer the problems go away so it'll probably be the shorty wires causing it.

Never heard of switching to a winter blend fuel, it doesn't get that cold here anyways. It's been a couple of years since we've seen any snow here :-(.

Upgrading to 06 coils... is out of the question for me now, don't have the budget for it. Guess going back to the original rat's nest of plug wires is the only solution then?

Perhaps the shorty's you have are just broken down from time/use and a new set will fix the problem. You did say they had been on there for a couple years and have worked good up to this winter.
