Unhappy Dead Lifter from the New Guy

Hi all im new here and starting out with problems lol, other forum i was part of wasnt much help so hoping htis i better. Well ive got a dead lifter im pretty sure, Loud tick at startup fades when oil warms up but is still there and has progressively gotton worse, anyone replaced them and have a suggestion on parts or a place to buy parts. Ive read its about a 9hr job for dealer time so most likely do this in the driveway going to assume its harder to get to than to actually do. Is this a common problem on the 5.7 with MDS, and if i use non MDS lifters do i just need a tuner to shut off MDS or ???. Also located in Savannah GA if anyone wants to assist in pulling heads for the weekend...

They are fun not to bad but fun non the less. Yes you can put non mds lifters in and be fine. I would suggest if your going that far to remove the solenoids also and you will need a tuner to turn off the mds and the engine light. Savannah is a tad far for me but I would help if you were closer it's what I do all day!

Welcome, are you sure it's a lifter and not a broken exhaust bolt? You can use a hose and hold one end to your ear and then move the other end down around the manifold listening for the tic. Good luck..

at first i thought it was a exhaust leak but ive been under the truck and looked for a leak and havent felt anything while it was running and sounds closer to the block but when checking from the hood it sounds higher than the mani and too far forward on the engine... it almost sounds like a louder than normal injector tick

Do all of your spark plugs look the same?

If you remove the exhaust manifolds in preparation to pull the heads it'll give you a chance to inspect them for leaks. So I'd pull the exhaust manifolds before removing anything else just in case that's the problem..
