In the late 70's while working at the ship repair facility in San Diego I was involved with evaluation of flamespray of metals and ceramics in both corrosion control and repair. I aluminumized the first set of Blackjack headers before they went into production. We sprayed aluminum for corrosion control and ceramic in pumps to eliminate cavitation damage. Hell we sprayed everything we could get our hands on including alot of manifolds with ceramic. We didn't polish the pieces, but left them mostly with a light rough finish which often was painted.

When I 1st started here, I coated every thing I could..Driveshafts , Axle housings Calipers , you name it I coated it.......Now I just coat what needs it.

This industry is going to hit some major changes in the next few years with all the issues and regulations on Chromic acid , over in Europe they are making it harder and harder to use some of the non chrome free coating.

The system I used most was Metco. I really like the ceramic coating. It had a nice texture with a silver gray color. I noticed it trapped heat but didn't give it a lot of thought. Plus it eas easy to clean. I sprayed alot of brass and babbitt for bearings.. even did a few main shaft spring bearings weighing several hundred pounds.
