05 Hemi smoking occasionally on start up

Hi all,

I have an '05 Ram that only has 67,000 miles on it. I have had it a little over a year. Bought it with 64,000 miles on it. It is very clean. I had no issues during the first year but back in Sept. I took it to the dealer for the two recalls (airbag and pinion nut). While there I had them do an oil change (first one since I owned it). They used synthetic Penzoil.

About a week or so after that, on occasion during start up it will puff some bluish/white smoke. This is most frequent when it has been run for a little bit, allowed to sit for an hour or two and then restarted.

I am at a loss as to while a low mileage engine would be doing this. Could the issue be going to the synthetic oil (no idea what the PO was running), bad valve seals, PCV clogged or ???

Any thoughts or tests I should try? I do think it is on the original plugs so could it be not getting a strong spark due to wear of the plug tips? Need some help please!

Lightbulb

In previous times - blue = oil / white = water
Not sure where we are with this one yet
67K is not many miles for sure on a well maintained truck...
Hope it's something simple...

It's definitely oil burning as you can smell it. It's not a sweet smell that coolant gives off when burnt.

Hope something simple too...

Likely a seal like stated! Seems odd that's for sure that low miles having that issue. Never know though may have had work done and this be a side effect. Hard to tell without testing. Vakve seals there is t really a test. But you can do a compressio. Check cold partly warn and got if good you know its not the rings, also a leak down test will tell you if something is wrong. Make sure and check the pcv system for proper opperation may just be a puddle getting sucked up on start up too

Yeah check your pcv. I did not know we had one until last week lol. Its a $30 part and takes 5 minutes to change. At 75k miles mine was bad.

Spark plugs should have been replaced at 30K, and every 30K after the first change.

Yep, found out about this and ordered one yesterday. I'll try swapping that out. Plugs will be next.

Put new PCV in and no change. Seems very weird that all of this started up after having the oil change. Bad valve seals at this low of mileage would seriously make me reconsider owning this truck. I have been into classic Chevy's for decades and have had engines that were 40+ years old, 150,000+ miles and not have this issue.

I know back in my Miata days, when folks would switch over to Mobil 1 oil, many of the 50,000+ mileage cars would start having issues with oil leaks. It was found that the molecule size of Mobil 1 synthetic oil was smaller and would weep through old gaskets easier than conventional oils. Makes me wonder if this is a similar issue.

Have you checked to see if they over filled the engine? As for bowties not smoking I'm calling BS.
