WEIRD gauge issue with my Durango

Ok so im working on my 2005 Dodge Durango 5.7 AWD.

I'll start by saying it runs and drives perfectly fine. However, when i get in and drive the gauge drops drastically and the DTE (distance till empty) gauge in the overhead console also drops very quickly (both with in a couple of minutes. I just drove it and i started at 1/4 tank of fuel according to the gauge. The DTE read 89 miles till empty so i take it for a ride and by the time i get back it dropped to 39 (50 miles drop according to DTE) I actually drove 14 miles and the fuel gauge dropped to less than 1/8 of a tank. I also reset my avg economy to see if its jacked up and it still reads between 19 and 20 mpg which is normal for this vehicle

This is where it gets weird.......
Turn engine off, turn key back to run with engine off (to check for possible codes) and DTE climbs back to over 100 miles till empty and the gas gauge is up to almost 1/2 tank now within about 2 - 4 minutes
What in the crap is going on???....lol

Probably the fuel level sender going bad. Have to drop the tank to get at it. I don't believe this issue will throw codes until it gets out of normal parameters.

That was my first thought. However, i DO live in NE Ohio and its been really cold the last few days (single digits a couple times) and i wonder if maybe it just needs thawed out....however it was parked in my attached garage so im not really seeing freezing being a possibility which leads me back to sending unit as well

My 04 1500 did that also. Battery was going south so I replaced and all was well.

How old is your battery?

A low performing battery in our vehicles will create a host of strange symptoms. If you have your battery checked and it is not at peak, I would start there first. My 2 pennies.

Yea ive definitly run into weird crap with a battery thats bad or "not great". I think ill so that first. Another problem with our vehicles is wiring. For some reason Dodge has never had good wiring. Im wondering if it might be a corroded plug or bad ground...etc

This is most likely a bad sender or one that acts up from time to time.
