Fuel injected engines require a way to control and gauge the amount of air being allowed into the engine. Throttle position is calibrated to the fuel injectors pulse width, rpm and manifold pressure as basic tuning inputs. So basically bigger TB, more air, more fuel more power. Custom tuning is required for major changes. Minor changes can be handled by a stock tune to a certain degree...
