Question Using spark plug non foulers to eliminate CEL?

OK..I am mostly convinced that my P0420 cat efficiency codes are never going away with the walker cats that are now on the truck...grr

I could have them replaced at my labor cost but most of the experts say there is a good chance that they will continue to occur.

Some have suggested using a pair of spark plug non foulers on the post cat O2 sensors to move them out of the exhaust stream and that this will eliminate the CEL..

What say you?

or get a custom flash/tune to have the monitoring turned off for the 2 rear O2s

This is a how I understand it works, the front, along with sensing AFR also counts flips. A flip is a change in voltage. The rear O2s also counts flips, when the count is the same you get a code. By isolating the rear O2s it obviously changes the count and there is no code. You can remove the rear O2s, wrap it in tin foil and tie it out of the way or use the anti-foulers to isolate the O2s and do the same thing. Or if you have a CMR tune you can simply have it turned off.
Good luck.

sometimes foulers work sometimes not. a tune we can shut them off in. I would first have it confirmed that the catt is not actually going out prior to making the light go away its not good for the motor if it gets plugged up. or simply remove cats all together and then have sensors turned off problem solved. either way the issue needs to be found and solved then cover it don't just make light go out and prey.

Had a 98 Durango with hi-flow cat that would throw this code. I used an O2 Sim from Dan the Fastman Arcand that plugged into the downstream sensor. No more codes.

Wonder if people are still using sims?

Sims are needed when the emission system does live checks to see if the system is operating. Thankfully not necessary on at least our older Rams. New ones I have no idea...

cats only 1 year old..6 K miles

The cat system has only been on the truck for 6 K miles. As I said, I had a failure to achieve closed loop fueling for a while on that same bank but only for less than 1 K miles..would that short a fuel rich mixture affect the cat that quickly?

As I said, truck is getting 17-18 MPG at 60 with cruise on..

I have found O2 sensor extenders,O2 sensor extenders WITh cat material in them,(Mini cat Mechanical simulators(Amazon). and some neat elbow style O2 sensor extenders with assorted restrictor plates(Vibrant 11619).. Along with right angle adapters and o2 sensor hole plugs..lol

I.m thinking of trying the extenders with the catalytic material in them..

Well of both catts are new then it's likely a sensor issue causing the problem on one specific bank of the motor. Bad sensors are a deff possibility.
