header back exhaust upgrade

Ok so I want to replace my stock exhaust from headers to tips.
it is Dual Exhaust. I thought I might go in sections. I was thinking that I would get a cat back first, then later remove the CC's and put test pipes in place and then change out the headers. Thoughts???

I have questions. First what is the difference between short tube and long tube headers? if I had to guess, it would be that long tube is for no Cat Converter??

second, if I wanted test pipes to replace my Cat Converters, where would I get them?

would it be beneficial, financially or performance wise, to save up and do this all at once, or is in sections ok?

this is the first time for me doing this so any tips and pitfalls to avoid or what to look out for, or advice would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

also recommendations as to exactly what brand or parts you recommend

If they are available for your application I always go with the Dynatech Supermaxx complete stainless steel systems. There are several others that are very good and perhaps at more moderate prices.
Just buy quality products whatever you do...it is a very disappointing P-I-T-A to install ill-fitting junk that takes a lot of time and doesn't perform.

Best advice is FORGET the true dual exhaust system, those on here who went full duals regretted doing so, and went back to the Y pipe. The shorties allow you to keep your Y pipe, which is where your cats are located. The long tubes go all the way down to your tranny, then the Y pipe with cats if required in your living area. Off the Y pipe you will need a 3" pipe, where you will install a single inlet muffler (if desired) with dual 2 1/2" outlets, this is where your dual pipes out the back/side come into play. When installing headers, use only stock manifold gaskets, grade 8 bolts, and spray the exhaust manifolds old bolts several times over several days with a penetrant like Break Free. Be very careful removing the old bolts, as they are easy to break. Go with stainless steel all the way, it will last much longer. Good luck with your project.

Long tubes into a matching Y single in muffler to single or dual out. Best way to do it is all at one time saves money and less hassle.

I was told true duals killed power by several folks and went ahead and installed them anyway. I believe Keith and I worked on the tune for a week and I took them back off going back to a ORY pipe and si/so muffler dumped coming out the muffler. Immediately the power was back. The duals are simply power killers..

will long tube headers eliminate the cat converter or do I still need "test tubes" to bridge the gap??

It will eliminate them but you could add them back in after the headers. With a tuner I could simply turn the rear 02s off and run not Catts
