Recently, I did my first mod. It's an enclosed, insulated cai kit with a wet filter. I told the wife it would help with gas mileage...I think she bought the idea...maybe?..I hope Anyway, back to my reason for posting this thread...Pre-Filters. I have made my mind up that having a pre-filter is a good idea. More so, since my Ram is a 4x4. I have surfed the ends of the net and found this, that and the other in pre-filters. Some running as high as boo-coo bucks and some roughly half as the more expensive ones. Looking at the illustrations...Each of them look the same as the next one. Is there a difference in grade of material and performance? It's all so confusing to me.

I can only speak for the AFE system. I'm using the AFE High Breather CAI (the one most people hate because it retains the Hemi-Hat) and the AFE pre-filter. The pre-filter is ridiculously expensive (about $35.00) in my opinion but I bought it just the same because it fits very well, is durable, was color-matched to the filter and it DOES keep bugs, lint and a lot of annoying debris out of the filter pleats thus greatly reducing servicing the filter.
As for performance the AFE techs assured their customers that they would not be able to challenge their trucks hard enough to see any reduction in performance. I've used this system for five years without a problem.
Hope this helps out a bit!

Outerwear makes them in different colors. I have been running one for about 5 years...couple of different ones actually. They run from around $20 to $35 depending on where you buy them. I think they help a lot. At least they keep the bugs and crap from screwing up your filter if nothing else.

I ran one of these on the CAI I had on my 2500.

It was mostly just to keep large amounts of mud from getting directly onto the filter.

Check Amazon. I got the aFe high breather there for 246 and the pre-filter for 27 both free shipping. Must have got lucky as the CAI is 290 now, but that's still cheap. Not sure what brand CAI you have...

So what everyone here is telling me is that a pre-filter by any other name is still the same...right? Same little weave of mesh, same material, same - same - same! That's what I thought too! I mean - holy-moly - I pride myself as being the "Powershopper" of the century, but when I find some going for $60.00 for the same product that I can buy for $35.00 - $36.00 with a different name added to the product...It makes me wonder? I guess in one word it can all be summarized...GREED!

Some info. on the cai I purchased: I know I will get slammed for buying this...Might even lose my membership over this on HTC [J/K'g...ummmm, maybe?] I purchased a Volant cai. I had several good reasons as to why I went with this product, while the manufacturer lays claims to some impressive "promises" (give me awhile and I'll see if they live up to them). When it's all said and done, in the end, it nets me something I really like under the hood. That is, with one small exception...and in short time I'll see if "Tech Support" will rectify the problem by relocating the air breather port on the air duct.

Price? And I know most, some, maybe none will believe me, but I purchased the entire kit for $258.00 + tax locally in Phoenix.

Oh! And thanks for the replies!

Hey Doc, I'm using the same set up on my 4x4 and I'm ready for a new pre-filter. I'm just having a bit of a problem finding the right one. Outerwear's website is a little trippy, yeah?

I think Doc is using this one from AFE? (Scroll down). They don't tell you, but 28-10041 is yellow, 28-10043 is black, 28-10044 is blue. I don't think there is a red one. Amazon has these for $27 search AFE 28-1004x.
I was just looking this stuff up today because I am going to sell my intake.
