Cleaning the Hemi?

I realized my Hemi is looking kind of dirty. I want to clean it but have never cleaned an engine before. Is there anything I need to know or anything I need to protect from water before I go ahead and clean it? Any type of cleaners that will help with the process?

I would cover the alternator with a plastic bag. Other than that I never do anything thing else. Get a good de-greaser, and dilute it to about a 50/50 mixture. Lightly spray the engine bay and fenders with water. Spray the engine bay down with the de-greaser let set fr a minute or so. Scrub any bad areas, rinse good using as little water as possible. Take the bag off alternator and Start the truck and let idle for a couple minutes to help dry.

Thanks Cruel! It has been bugging me for a while now but I didn't want to just go ahead and do it without some kind of advice first. Much appreciated! I want to get the engine looking nice and clean for the S&B intake I will be getting!

The simple green really cleans things up but be advised it will remove every bit of oil- I had a lot of light rust in the engine compartment after I did that. Maybe just the climate and salt they use here. There was a thread a while back in detailing that discussed this, there are some products made for engine compartment detailing that leave a protective film, I can't remember the name, but the one I tried worked pretty good.

I'm a little leary of putting a pressure washer under the hood, but cleaning my motorcycles I simple green them down and blast them with a pressurer washer. The truck I use WD-40 and brushes and rags. And yes my engine doesn't look as nice as most of yours.

I don't need my engine to look in showroom condition. Just want to wash the dirt off. There doesn't seem to be a lot of oil/grease on it....just a lot of dirt. It gets very windy where I am which means a lot of dirt blowing around. Mind you the oil/grease is probably hiding under the dirt.
