I thought the 20" wheels on my '12 were chrome, but when I was cleaning them today, they felt like plastic.

It is a type of plastic coating. I found this:
Quote:
Chrome cladded can be described as a wheel that has a chromed stainless steel or plastic fascia that is permanently attached to a steel or alloy wheel.

I had an 04 with plastic clad wheels. Never experienced any problems with them.

I may be in the minority but I like the chrome clad. The don't rust!! Never had an issue with them of any kind.
