Rear axle

Rear axle question, I have rotational play in the rear differential. When the truck is stopped I can rotate the driveshaft about 3/4 inch (still have to measure how much it is exactly) back n forth. This is crap especially with a manual, with an auto trans the converter acts as a 'spring' and you don't notice this play. With a manual however there is no converter to act as a spring and the play is very noticable when coming of the throttle.

Now on to my questions. There is a local guy that is selling an SRT10 dana 60, problem is it needs new discs n pads, plus the pinion flange is different plus it's a quadcab so have to cut of the spring perches and weld em under the axle. I can probably make it fit, but it'll take some time and doing and I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle.

I now have the stock rear axle, everything is fresh inside with a detroit truetrac locker, only the ring and pinion needs to be changed. Till what hp are these axles rated? Removing the stock rear axle having it fixed and bolting it back in is the easiest solution for me.

I would say leave the 9.25" there I have not broken mine and the Sharadon truck at 850hp didn't break there's so they are strong enough. The play you have is fairly normal especially being a manual trans that's the back lash I'm the diff and the trans your feeling.

What would be the max limit for rotational play, measured on the driveshaft? Found some info online about backlash, but all instructionals measure backlash during assembly, not after it's all assembled.

Good news on the 9.25 being that strong, didn't want to go through the hassle of getting the SRT10 axle to work with my driveshaft.

Unfortunately DTT cannot be rebuilt and adds to the backlash. I spoke to the manufacturer rep about rebuilding mine and was told it would need to be returned to the factory.

Most trucks I check at work have 1/2-3/4 play in them it's all just slop play. Yes manuals if you roll backwards a little when taking off you will feel this whereas in an auto you won't.

Sorry guys, guess it was panic for nothing, I measured it properly and only moves like 3mm/0,118". Guess that's just the play in the entire diff?

Guess the chatter I'm feeling is coming from the clutch.

Click to play:
