New Demon is going to be FWD!!!!

A front wheel drive sports car seems counter-intuitive to me. If I was in the market for a sports car FWD would eliminate that Demon as a choice. I'd want to be able to hang the back end out if I need to for negotiating a corner. FWD understeers.

There are some pretty capable FWD track cars out there. VW/Audi and Ford Focus SVT come to mind with the right suspension tuning. Hell, there are FWD cars that are doing better than RWD cars in the same class of Auto cross. If I were to have a dedicated track car, a RWD is definitely where it's at though.

I used to autocross in the SCCA with a 1977 VW Rabbit. My driving technique relied on left foot braking while under power in the corners. It worked like a charm, but I went through brake pads like you wouldn't believe. Under hard cornering my Rabbit would be on 3 wheels...both front wheels and the outside rear wheel. People told me that on occasion the lifted inside rear wheel would be so high and I'd be taking the corner so tight the lifted wheel would actually step over pylons. I had the car to beat in the stock classes. In fact I turned better lap times than many a supposedly faster RWD car. So yes, FWD can be made to go around corners. It takes a lot of practice to left foot brake well while going fast around corners. But my Rabbit was not only my autocrosser...it was also my daily driver. I practiced all the time. This pic is me in action.
