Backing plate access?

I'm putting new brakes on all around on my '05 1500. But this is the first time changing out the parking brake. I'm doing the whole assembly on both sides. But I got one side taken apart before the sun went down and it looks like the backing plate won't come off without removing the axle shaft. Is this true? Any options/alternatives? I'd really like to get them off, as they're totally full of rust and I'd like to sand them down and repaint them.

I guess it is all about how deep you want to go. Are the axle seals leaking? That would be a motivation to go deeper.

The seals are fine. I just did a drain and fill on the rear diff about 3k miles ago, so I'd rather not open it again and risk doing something to the seals or something. I've never pulled the axle shafts before. Plus I need the truck back on the road ASAP. It's my only vehicle. I suppose I can just copper wire everything and spray them with something or hand paint them.

The only other problem is the parking brake lever. I couldn't get it out either. Is there a way to get those out without pulling the axles? They need to be cleaned or replaced also.

Since you don't want to pull the axles, an effective method might be to use a spray on rust remover. I have not used these so cannot make a recommendation.

Thanks. Rust remover is a good idea. I used Por15 once on my old Monte Carlo. The kit came with a rust neutralizer. It turned it all black, then you seal it with the Por15. Seemed to work pretty well.

The parking brake cables will come out of the backing plate they have springlike tabs on the end that goes thru the plate itself you have to depress the and pull cable at same time kinda a pain in the butt

To remove backing plate only way is to pull the axles
