2500 LSD Question

Can someone please explain the operation of the mechanical LSD on the 2500's. I understand that thier are no clutch plates and when you jack up the rear end; the wheels will not spin in the same direction when you turn one side by hand; so how does it work? Is thier anything special i should know on how to operate this? I also read somewhere that if 1 wheel is on ice and the other is on dry pavement; both rear wheels will not engauge without at least momentarily pressing on the brake pedal to create torque on the slipping wheel. Is this correct? Thanks!!

Mark

2500 LSD Question

It uses gears similar to a worm-gear drive inside the case. Under power when one wheel is slipping, there has to be enough resistance on the spinning wheel for the "worm-gears" to engage, hence it may not work with one wheel on ice and one on dry pavement without using the brake. Once you get it engaged, it works more like a locker than a limited slip until you let off the gas. On my truck, with one on wet grass and one on dry pavement, it locks up with no problem. Last week I went up and played in the snow in a big empty parking area, and had to play with the gas and brake to get it to engage. There's an internal picture of the setup in the service manual, I'll see if I can find it and post it.

Better? Got'em down to 80KB, they were close to 300 before. Any smaller and I'm not sure they'd be legible.
