Memphis Motorsports Park has a new owner

MMSP closed over a year ago apparently a victim of the bad economy. It is a great facility with a nationals grade 1/4 mile drag strip, road racing track, and NASCAR 3/4 mile oval track. I attended many an event there. It was a sad day when it closed, but it has been bought at an auction for under 2 million bucks. A heck of a buy! Looks like MMSP will be hosting some IHRA events with more to be added. Great news.

It's official. The former NHRA 1/4 mile track at Memphis will be sanctioned by the IHRA and they will be open for racing this season.

Anyone within driving distance should go try it out. The track is known to have "teeth" and plenty of record times have been turned there many times. It was my home track for years when I lived in Memphis. Great facilities and a great track. I plan to race there some myself this year.

Memphis Motorsports Park has a new owner

The ADRL puts on one hell of a show. The first race at the new MIR will be the ADRL. In 2009 the ADRL pulled in the biggest one day crowd ever at this same facility when it was Memphis Motorsports Park. I may have to go to this.

by Andrew Wolf on March 4, 2011

When the 2009 season came to a close, so too did the gates at the fabled Memphis Motorsports Park, leaving many to question when or if the facility would ever contest another drag race. That question was answered this off season as a group of buyers behind the resurgence of Florida’s Palm Beach International Raceway were the winning bidders during an auction of property. The new ownership group renamed the track Memphis International Raceway and maintained a focus on bringing major events back to the schedule. The track made it’s big step in that process on Thursday by announcing a return of the American Drag Racing League to open the racing season on May 20-21. With the addition, drag racings’ premiere eighth mile drag racing league now has 10 races on its 2011 ADRL Tour.

We are excited to add Memphis International Raceway to our 2011 schedule,” said Jeff Fortune, ADRL Executive Vice President. “This will be one more great event to what we firmly believe is the best schedule the ADRL has ever had in the series’ history.
“We’ve had some very exciting events there and I think it is terrific that we will able to return to an incredible place like Memphis International Raceway. We are thrilled to be the first event at MIR, which will add even more excitement to what will already be an fantastic weekend.”
