TO SHOW or NOT TO SHOW

Thought it would be interesting to get some feed back from the group on "SHOW & SHINES" and "CAR SHOWS" Years ago they use to be fun family events, it seems that these days they've become money making competitions. What do people think about where things are going with all these shows? The picture below is from last years Car Show in Sweden where they had over 20,000 vehicles entered for the one week event!!

Very impressive, looks like it would be fun. There are a few local ones I might go to if red is polished up. I prefer parts swap meets

Both formats are fun but with extremely different objectives. I showed muscle cars and exotic super cars for many years in ISCA Shows where you hauled in an enclosed trailer and did 'finish detailing' literally with a Q-Tip everywhere including the underside. If you wanted to win you had all bolt heads and screw heads aligned, etc. Get the picture?

Now if I show at all it's just for fun and friendship .

I agree with the laid back fun and friendship ones or even the show & shines I've stopped during the week.

Every show car isn't a race car. But every race car can be a show car.

I like that statement,
Every show has it's experts, those guys who make snide comments about a 67 R/T having 13 in blade on it instead of the factory 14's.
For me the thing I enjoy is the people who would take the time to really look over your ride, the ones that you can see are day dreaming about owner your ride or they are visualizing what it would be like to drive it.. I know I myself can get lost in that thought about some of the cars/trucks I see .
I miss it myself , I stopped because of the purist type a-holes, I let them ruin it for me.....but never again, I'm looking forward to taking the purple truck out to a few shows/cruise nites.

I ignore folks all full of themselves with some obsurd details. It's about the car, the feelings it pulls out of you just looking at it. On the Pickers program on TV they found 34 roadster buried in the back of a shop. It was a skilled build from the fifties running a flathead, offy heads, two 97's, generator, Buick drum brakes, three speed trans and a Columbia rearend. Had honest wear from use. The guy didn't realize what was and told them $10,500 but wouln't budge. They criticized everything that made it a hot rod. Pissed me off big time, I havent watch them since. .... as you can tell I'm not much on about techno (sic) rods.

Thumbs up

I think the 'Rat Rod' movement might be a fun way to show-n-go without all of the bs associated with today's purist show car associations...

Since I use to regularly attend my fair share of these events, I have a very astute observation regarding "Show & Shines" and "Car Shows" in the general Phoenix area. You are on target when you said, "They've become money making competitions." I don't mind when a registration fee of 25 to 30 dollars of my money helps a benefit. What I do mind is when a sizable portion (or any portion) is used to help line the pockets of some nondescript individual passing themselves off as a production company over and over again. That is where I draw the line!!!
