Removing spindles and ball joints?

Hi all, well this weekend my buddy and I are doing my suspension swap. Putting dropped spindles on as well as replacing the lower ball joints. Just wanted to see if there are any tips and tricks for removing either of these items. Figure a few of ya all have done this.

Thanks for any help or insight you can give.

You can rent a ball joint removal tool from your local auto parts store. The wheel bearings on the older trucks usually have corrosion and are difficult to remove. If they are the originals you might consider just replacing them and skip the hassle.

Yep, going to pick that up Friday. Truck only has 63,000 miles so not looking to replace unit bearings at this point. Truck is super clean, like almost showroom condition underneath so hopefully everything come apart easily.

Since I am a old school car guy (primarily pre '72) I have lots of tricks for removing spindles when the ball joint studs are pointing at each other. Since modern trucks have them pointing in the same direction, I am concerned on how to pop the lower one off the spindle since it is not loaded with spring tension like the upper.

When I did ball joints on my '01 Ram, I used a hammer drill with a forked end to cut the rivets off, then used a pointed bullet end to push them out.

Put the floor jack under the LCA and jack it up to load the suspension. Stick a 2x4 or something similar between the UCA and the spring housing. Put a jack stand under the frame and take the load off the LCA, lower ball joint is now loaded by the spring. Loosen the Ball Joint nut a couple turns and smack the joint area a couple times and it should let go, with the nut keeping it from coming apart. I leave the floor jack closely under the LCA just as an extra measure of caution.

Remove tie rod and caliper bracket. Remove upper balljoint nut. Snack spindle at balljoint stud area will pop out. Loosen lower almost all the way then smack spindle at base near stud spindle will drop down once joint releases. Then use press to change joint itself. Under 30 mins a side with air tools.

Thanks guys for all the tips. Between that and a YouTube video I watched, it's all fairly standard removal.

Can't wait to get this thing lowered!!!!

Everything went great. All the parts come off without any issues and I am loving the new stance!
