Rear differential Issue

Hey,

I don't know exactly when this started happening, but when I'm driving 40+mph, I'm feeling a vibration - sort of through the steering wheel. There is also a bit of a sound coming from the back too. It gets worse when I go faster. My friend thinks it the "carring"(?) bearings or something like that going out. Is there any way to easily troubleshoot this? I'm not much of a mechanic, and I know nothing about rear difs and drivetrains.

Thanks!

There were severe problems and recalls on '03 to '05 1500's differentials. My suggestion from reading your 205K mileage post on another thread is to address this issue quickly. On my '05 I replaced the differential with a Detroit True Trac and Motive 4:56 gears BEFORE it exploded on me like others on here have experienced.

...and again to HTC

Vibration in front on or off brake or just cruising?

The rear is the noise there cruising or louder when you coast or decell.

Hemifun05 - Oh crap! Now I'm significantly more worried.

No vibration with breaking - I know the roters and breaks are good on all four because I just replaced them recently. The noise and vibration completely stop under 40mph. Both start there and get worse as the speed increases.

I've got it scheduled for the end of this week to get looked at by a drivetrain specialist. I just can't bring myself to taking it to the dealer again Keep you posted. Thanks or the help

Good luck... vibration can also be tires out of balance.

Not trying to overly alarm you but I think due caution is warranted given the symptoms, accumulated mileage (205k) and the '03-'05 year model.

Some resolution

It turns out there were two issues - bad bearings and driveshaft out of alignment.

Cost me $750 all together. Kind of sucks - I wanted to try fixing it myself, but the mechanic scared the hell out of me when he told me how careful I would need to be to set everything in place right, so I just payed them to do it.

Vibration and noise are gone.

Glad you got it fixed. Did they show you the bearings? Also did they replace the driveshaft with a new one?
