2017 8spd Towing, Tuning, and Gears

Good evening everyone,

Iím posting this for a friend at work who recently bought a 2017 Quad Cab with the 8spd tranny. He recently went on a 1200 mile road trip up through the pan handle here in FL, and averaged about 10.0 mpg. This was towing a 26í camper weighting roughly 7,300 lbs. He kept it at about 62-63 mph, and had tow and haul turned on. The dealer tech told him once he got up to cruising speed, to turn tow and haul off, once the torque converter locked up. He tried it a few times, but never seen any improvement on the dash. It mostly road in 7th gear either way, and only hit 8th going down a steep hill.

So today he asked me about a tuner, and ask if there would be any way to get better MPG from one. Obviously we all know the 8spdís can be tuned to be extremely quick. Much faster then the 5spd. Josh was basically in the 12ís in a Quad Cab with a tune and a set of long tubes, but mpg isnít something we generally care about while looking for more horsepower.

Whatís your opinions on getting a tuner, versus just doing a set of 4:56. The truck has 3:92 from the factory. Thereís no point in him buying a tuner to make more horsepower only to burn more fuel. Also the 2015-2017 require buying a new PCM, which adds to the upfront cost too. Thanks for your input.

Does he have 17s or 20s? Either way I'd try dropping the tire size first to get a feel for gears as it's the cheapest option. Maybe pick up a nice used set of stock 17s for a dedicated towing setup?
