Exclamation Revisit to my 1.5 yr nightmare.........

This is a copy to a post I made to a Ram Group on FaceBook yesterday..

Just wanted to pass a long a little note of warning for you all - I am assuming that this may happen to Diesel owners as well.

Chrysler (Dodge) in their vast stupidity designed our trucks with a stupid circuit board inside the fuse box - TIPM or TPMI or what ever the hell it is - and this can sometimes cause problems, so bad that even the Stealerships can't figure it out...

Almost 1.5 yrs ago I took my truck in for a factory recall - drivers side air bag - and about a month after I got it back I started having trouble trying to start it. Turn the key, click...

OOOOOOk....

Thought maybe it was the battery - factory battery was about 11 yrs old and still working great. Went to Costco and got a new one, things were ok for about 2 days and it started again. Called Dodge and they wanted $165 just to check it out... ok, flock that! I've been out of work since 2009 and $ is scarce...

I went to Pepboys and they did their $20 alternator / starter check / test and told me my starter was bad so I went ahead and had them put in a new one - Dodge doesn't have them anymore for trucks over 10 yrs old.

Got the truck back and it was ok again for only 3 days, took it back, they changed the starter and it was pretty much ok for about a year, occasionally no start clicks but after the 2nd or 3rd try it would start.

Back in March it got worse, big time worse.

(Added for here: I broke down and called Dodge and made an appointment and brought it in. They kept the truck for almost 2 1/2 hours and told me that it "REQUIRED" a computer update (programming) and I asked if this was going to help fix the problem and they told me that it was a good probability so I said ok. Another almost 2 hours and I got the truck back, they said it was ok.

Got into the truck after paying them 15 arms and 27 legs and started to drive off. It ran like ****!!!!!!

When I came to a stop at the light it kept trying to stall out. I immediately did an illegal U turn and went back and yes I was majorly pissed. I parked the truck at an angle in the middle of their drive up lane to purposely block it and stormed into the office and went ballistic, they tried to calm me down and said that it was normal and the truck had to learn again. WTF?????

I went back out to start it and NOPE! Nothing but clicks!

Yea I was ready to kill!

Went back in, they took the keys and brought it into the shop - did they pull it into a bay? NO! Did they raise it up? NO! Stupid *** mechanic that doesn't have the brains God gave a golf ball just opened the hood and did something, came back 20 min later and told me that my headers were too close to the starter and that it had over heated and was messed up.

I said F*** it and stormed off. Went back to PepBoys the next day and they checked the truck and said the starter was bad. Well, life time warranty on it and yes THEY had to replace it or I would lose the warranty.. bastards.. So this time, I went to be on the safe side and bought a insulating wrap for the started (that I had to beg them and they gave in and installed it free) and then got the truck back.

Seemed ok till the next morning.....

FLOCK ME!! Starter not working right again!

That's when I finally gave in!

Back to the post from facebook now.. )

I was able to find a phone number for a local guy who's a consultant for dealers and also does local work (only charged me $85 total) and he came to my house and checked my truck and found that it wasn't the starter, it wasn't the fuse box, it was the computer.. AND DODGE DOESN'T SELL THOSE ANYMORE!

What the problem was is that when I try to start the truck, the computer was not grounding 1 wire...

He did manage to find out that there IS a fix for this problem..

There is a wire that goes to the computer from the fuse box and I told him to go ahead and fix it, if it didn't help I'd have to order a rebuilt computer (from a website he gave me). He cut the wire and then ground it. Truck starts every time now..

Ummmmmmmmmm...

Only thing is that I do HAVE to warn ANYONE who I let start the truck to makes SURE it is in PARK or NEUTRAL FIRST!!!

It WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! start in drive or reverse now .. LOL

This website link is for all makes, they will sell you a computer, rebuilt, with a life time warranty, programmed with your Vin and Mileage (you gotta give them that first.. )

These Stealerships are so GOD DAMNED STUPID that their mechanics - if you are brave enough to call them that - DO NOT have the brains God gave a golfball - they can't figure out the problem and are too stupid to look or find out, rather charge you $ for bullcrap that is not what the problem is........

There is additional wire that can be jumped to allow starting only in only park and neutral. Keith has it on his trans swap thread. I don't think anyone thought about stock pcm could have a similar problem.

it is definitely the PCM. Jack's elec. equipment is very specific and not for the average mechanic, he's a trained consultant that goes to Stealerships when they can't find the problem with the vehicles there. It definitely showed that the PCM was not grounding that lead for the starter.

Same thing happened when I took it to PepBoys the first time, the mechanic showed me using a remote start tool that also showed the amount of power going through that when he tried to start it through the fuse box it was only showing maybe at the most 2 - 4 volts 80% of the time and normal the other 20%, BUT, when he went to the 2 wires that are on the outside of the fuse box that go directly to the starter it was 12+Volts every single time.

I had thought maybe it was that stupid circuit card in the fuse box but Jack's equipment said no, all that is 100%, it IS the PCM..

The transmission has a p/n switch. When the transmission is place in either park or neutral it sends a ground sense to the PCM. The PCM then provides a ground to complete the starter circuit. Your technician ground this wire permanently to complete the starter circuit. I put a hidden switch on mine has a thief deterrent.

The wire he grounded is the wire I now have attached to my 46rh neutral safety switch lol. I am an ASE Master Technician and I will never work for a dealer they are over priced and the mechanics 90% of the time know nothing at all they simply do what the flow chart says can diagnose anything on there own anymore. In your case it's possible the neutral safety switch has an open randomly or the pcm just does not complete the relay ground causing your no start issue. Either way you can drive it now every time issue free just gotta watch that in gear start which likely won't ever happen in a stock column truck.

He tested that switch and it was not the problem, it was working perfectly.
