Dang! I think Herman Cain just lost me - I finally got an answer to the sales tax question: It's on top of the local sales tax, so my sales taxes would go to at least 16.5% and my income tax would go up, too.

I thought that was his deal.. Change the current 20+% income tax for a flat 9% plus a 9% sales tax.

I don't make enough money to pay 20% income tax. Currently, Floridians (and the illegals too) pay no sales tax on food and drugs. Plus we have no income tax. It sounds like his 9% would tax those things, too. Not sure on that, yet, but the sales tax increase would be quite a chunk, especially on big-ticket items. Imagine a 9% tax on a $300K house!

Texas has no income tax either, but we do have around 8.5% sales tax...some of it goes to the state some to the cities. Are you sure your tax is under 20%...?
Who can afford a $300K house? Never mind, I forgot how high land and houses are in Florida and California.

Our 2010 net income tax was way less than 20%. Now that's income tax ONLY. I didn't include Medicare or SS, which, if Congress would stop using it to buy votes from welfare cheats and illegals, we'd have a reasonable chance of a decent return. Yeah, I know: fat chance.

I truly don't know what our total tax bill is. We pay about $2k/yr for property taxes. Gas taxes are about 40% I think, so that's $280 ish so far this year. They say we work for the government until sometime in May. I guess that's right.

Doug, you just bought a new truck, right? In Florida, vehicles are taxed at the full rate for the county for the first $5K and 6% on the rest. The tax on a $40K truck would be $3,600 under Cain (I suppose) PLUS "only" $2,475 under the current system. That seems to make the tax on that truck over $6K. That's 15%!!

9% on $300 in groceries would be $27. For the most part now in Florida, it's 0.

I still need to read this stuff, but 9/9 (I ain't a corporation, but they'd pass it to me), seems that I would still pay Florida sales and property taxes on top of 9%. It would be a bear to run the numbers, but I gotta do it. This is too important to ALL of us to let the complacency continue.

The Feds CAN NOT mandate that your state have a state income tax. THAT is where Cain tried to get it through to the other 'thick skulls' on the podium - hence mixing apples and oranges. Perry of all people should favor Cain's plan - WE have NO state income tax and should never have one! One of the VERY best things anyone can do is work 24/7 to abolish YOUR state income tax if you happen to live in a state that forces it upon you.
Repeal totally the 16th amendment, adopt a fair, flat or some tax combination of both AND completely scrap the current tax structure along with abolishing the IRS and you will see this country prosper for everyone - QUICKLY!!!
